Siegfried Braune made difference

Siegfried "Sig" Braune, born 83 years ago in St. Michaels, Germany, died Monday across the globe in Anchorage, Alaska. But almost half his life was spent making a difference in Whitewater Township.

He organized the Miamitown Volunteer Fire Department in 1950 and remained active with it 25 years, including 11 as its chief. Mr. Braune founded Cub Scout Troop 53, Boy Scout Troop 53 and Explorers Troop 53 in the early 1950s.

He served as a township trustee during the late 1980s and brought water lines into Blue Jay, an area on the township's western outskirts. He and his second wife, Cecelia Schallick, helped set up an emergency food pantry for the poor, with much of the money for food coming from them.

As an electrician, he was township maintenance coordinator for six years.

As he prepared to retire as a trustee in late 1989 and move to Alaska where his daughter lived, he told The Post his immigrant heritage probably led to his tendency toward altruism, because he wanted to leave his adopted country - his family moved to the United States in 1927, when he was 10 - in better shape than he found it.

"It makes life worthwhile when good people feel you've done a good job," he said at the time.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Miamitown United Church of Christ. Visitation will be 9:30-11 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Mr. Braune was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice D. Hanaway Braune; son Gerald S. Braune; second wife, Cecelia Schallick Braune; and daughter Judy Ann Braune. He is survived by son Dirk "Pat" Braune of Texas ; daughter Beverly Ovitt of Alaska; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Diabetes. Association.
