Earl Auyer, retired GE engineer
Earl LeRoy Auyer, a retired General Electric engineer who helped develop the first jet engine in the United States, died Sunday. He was 93.
Mr. Auyer was on a GE team that in 1942 took jet engine technology developed by British engineers and transformed it into the first American jet engine a year later at Lynn, Mass.
He continued to develop jets through the '40s and moved to the Cincinnati area in 1950 to work at the company's jet engine complex at Evendale, said his son, Stephen Auyer, of Liverpool, N.Y.
Mr. Auyer spent 42 years with GE. After his retirement in 1972, he did consulting work for Japanese firms developing jet engines.
He lived in Cincinnati until moving to Liverpool, N.Y., in 1993.
"He was your basic mechanical engineer, he liked to build things," his son said. "I never had to worry about school projects. And we had the best nativity scene in our church."
Mr. Auyer grew up on a farm in Warners, N.Y., and earned an engineering degree from Syracuse University with a job on the railroad.
He was a member of Tau Beta Pi, Theta Tau, Phi Kappa Phi, Jet Pioneers and the Elfun Society, a group of GE executives and retired executives who do community work.
Surviving besides his son are his wife, Rachel Harter Auyer; another son, David H. Auyer, of Pittsburgh; and three grandchildren.

Ralph W. Husted, civic leader
Ralph W. Husted, business executive, civic leader, lawyer and a proponent of lifelong education, died Monday at the Rabbit Hash, Ky., home of his daughter, Catherine Anne Burleigh. He was 89.
Mr. Husted was born in Illinois and built his career in Indiana, where he retired as chairman and CEO of Indianapolis Power & Light and helped conceive the Liberty Fund - the largest private educational foundation of its type in the country.
He was president of the Indiana Council of Social Agencies in 1939 and 1940 and served on and led the Indianapolis Board of School Commissioners in the 1950s and 1960. He served on boards from the United Way to the Indiana State Symphony Society and was a national trustee for the Eisenhower Scholarship Foundation, the American Center for Judicial Studies and the Intercollegiate Studies Institute.
He and his wife, Margaret Walden Husted, moved to Rabbit Hash in 1999, after he developed severe emphysema.
His health was failing, but his mind remained sharp and his wit quick. Upon retirement he began reading the great books of the Western world, from the ancient Greek thinkers forward.
"He was Lincolnesque," said his son-in-law, Bill Burleigh, chairman and CEO of the E.W. Scripps Co. "He came from the Illinois Praire and had great rock-bottom values that he taught to his children and his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren.
"He had a lot to do with giving me confidence in my values as a young man, learning from someone you respect, realizing it's all right to believe certain things and fight for the things you believe in," Burleigh said.
"I don't think there was anybody he knew who did not profit from knowing him."
Other survivors include his wife, Margaret, a son, David W. Husted of New Palestine, Ind., seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Alfred Glenn, weather expert
Alfred Hill "Hilly" Glenn could talk about the weather like no one else. His conversations would include Mother Nature's effects on the world's oceans, offshore platforms and vessels at sea.
Ultimately, he made a career of it as a civil engineer, meteorologist and oceanographer.
Mr. Glenn, 79, of Moorefield, Ind., died at 4:42 p.m. Monday at his home. He was the founder and owner of A. H. Glenn and Associates in New Orleans, a company that conducts engineering studies in meteorology and oceanography for planning, design and operations of coastal and offshore energy facilities. Since 1946, he and his company served as consultants in such projects in more than 180 countries.
He was named a certified consulting meteorologist and fellow of the American Meteorological Society and a fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society in England, among many other professional honors.
Mr. Glenn also carried the title of Baron Blair of Scotland, as the head of the Blair Clan of Scotland. He was a member of the Eagle Ski Club in Gstaad, Switzerland and the Queen's Tennis Club in London.
Survivors include his wife, Holly Norris Glenn; sisters, Jean Glenn Patton of Bloomington, Ind., and Rosemary Glenn of Chula Vista, Calif.

Roberta Gerard, teacher, floral judge
Roberta "Bobbie" Gerard could put anyone - her students, her children's friends, even complete strangers - at ease.
"As soon as you met her, you'd feel like you've known her forever," said son Gregory, 32, of Anderson Township. "Even if she didn't know you, she knew you."
Mrs. Gerard, 57, of Mount Washington, died Monday of complications from a stroke.
"She was very personable," said family friend Chris Cann, 36, of North Avondale. "She could go anywhere and talk to anybody. She loved to talk."
Mrs. Gerard had earned a teaching degree from the University of Cincinnati in three years, then taught over the next 10 years for the Cincinnati Public Schools and at the Doherty school.
For 18 years, beginning in 1974, she and her family operated the Pumpkin Shell, a gift, floral and framing shop in Oakley.
She served as a flower show judge, created her own art, and returned to college to study architecture, before returning in 1994 to her first love - teaching.
This time she taught alongside her younger son, Bradley, 28, of Oakley, at the School for the Creative and Performing Arts.
Mrs. Gerard is survived by her husband, David. They would have celebrated their anniversary today.
She is survived by her husband and two sons.
Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. today at the Witt, Good and Kelsch Funeral Home in Oakley. Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Cecila's Church in Oakley. Memorials are requested to the School for the Creative and Performing Arts in Cincinnati.
