Paul Pearson, former MU president

Funeral services will be Tuesday in Oxford for Paul Pearson, 73, president of Miami University from 1981 to 1992, who died of cancer Saturday at his Oxford home.

During Pearson's 11-year tenure as president, Miami's graduation rates increased 15 percent, applications for the freshman class rose 18 percent and the university launched a successful $100 million fund-raising campaign.

"Miami University and the Oxford community have lost a great friend and a leader," said Miami President James Garland.

"Paul Pearson was a man of intelligence, humor and compassion. We have all benefited by his wise counsel and will miss him greatly."

Miami became known as one of the best values in higher education during Pearson's presidency and was referred to as a "Public Ivy" - a low-cost, public university that boasted the high academic reputation of private Ivy League universities.

Pearson also led efforts to diversify the racial makeup of Miami's students, faculty and staff.

He was a leader in Ohio's higher education community and was chairman of the Council of Presidents of the Inter-University Council of Ohio in 1988-89.

Pearson emphasized the role of higher education in rebuilding Ohio's economy and in improving the cultural and intellectual climate of the state.

He also took an interest in local issues. Under his leadership, Miami officials began meeting regularly with Oxford and Chamber of Commerce officials. Pearson rarely missed an opportunity to join a Saturday morning coffee group at the Oxford McDonald's.

After retirement, Pearson and his wife, Winifred, were frequent guests at student honor banquets, lectures, concerts and athletic events.

A native of Lake Worth, Fla., Pearson received bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Florida, where he studied zoology.

His scholarly research focused on the ecology of vertebrates and on the ecological impact of pollutants, such as pesticides and heavy metals, on ecosystems.

While president of Miami, Pearson often taught a course in the zoology department.

He served as president of the American Society of Zoologists, was an editorial board member of "American Zoologist" and associate editor of "Bioscience."

Pearson came to Miami after 26 years at Rutgers University in New Jersey, where he rose from faculty member to acting president.

He served on the boards of Union Central Life Insurance Co. of Cincinnati, the Ohio Nature Conservancy, Dayton Public Television, Ohio Northern University, Southwest Ohio Senior Services and Knolls of Oxford.

Survivors include his wife, Winifred; two sons, Thomas, of Atlanta, and Andrew, of Lexington, Ky.; a daughter, Jean McCabe of London, England, and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Oxford United Methodist Church, 14. N. Poplar St.

Father Daniel Foley 'believed in having a system'

"He was a very compassionate and prayerful individual, with a great concern for people who were hurting," said Father Jack Beckman. "He was always willing to give of himself to care for others. He was a true caregiver."

As chaplain Father Foley often rode with firefighters to fires and would counsel fire victims.

He was director of public relations and worked with the alumni association at St. Xavier High School during the 1957-58 school year.

After teaching, Father Foley began a 25-year career in Xavier University's psychology department. He then embarked on almost two decades of ministry at parishes throughout the archdiocese.

In 1996, he moved to the Faber Jesuit Community in Clinton Springs, where he served as assistant pastor at St. Andrew's Church.
