Dan Jenkins, 52, arts advocate

Dan Jenkins, the husband of award-winning Cincinnati blues and jazz singer Kathy Wade, died Tuesday in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Mr. Jenkins, the co-founder and president of Learning Through Art, a non-profit performing arts education organization, died of a heart attack, his wife said. He was 52.

The couple was vacationing in Mexico after the recent sixth "Hood Is Bigger Than You Think Summer Tour' here. The 'Hood program climaxed last Friday with a Crown Jewels of Jazz gala at concert at Music Hall - headlined by jazz legend Shirley Horn and at which Ms. Wade also performed.

"That's always a busy, stressful time, so we try to get away afterward to relax," Ms. Wade said today. "We had just watched a sunset when it happened."

Ms. Wade said that her husband of 12 years had no history of heart problems.

A graduate of Hughes High School and the University of Cincinnati, Mr. Jenkins was a computer analyst for 26 years with a subsidiary of Delta Air Lines.

It was his vision, Ms. Wade said, that led to the creation of Learning Through Art, which has sponsored arts programs in which more than 300,000 children have participated. Along with corporate sponsors, Learning Through Art also presents the 'Hood tour.

Ms. Wade, noting that her husband also had a passion for history and teaching, plans to establish a foundation in his memory that will provide free books to at least one local school.

"If he had done anything else, it probably would have been to teach history," she said. "He was so knowledgeable about history. I'll miss being able to walk over to him at a cocktail party and whisper, 'What's the answer'? Because he always knew it. This will be a wonderful way to remember him."

Contributions may be sent to the Dan Jenkins Memorial Fund, c/o Learning Through Art Inc., 1420 Sycamore Street, Cincinnati, Ohio, 45210.

Other survivors include a daughter, Dawn Denita Jenkins; a step-daughter, Karlyn Wade-Richardson; his mother, Geneva Jenkins; a brother and two sisters.

Henri Guglielmi, former Gourmet maitre d'

Henri Guglielmi was maitre d'hotel at the Gourmet Restaurant when it was one of downtown Cincinnati's most celebrated restaurants.

At the time of his induction as Mr. Gourmet of 1961, he said, "I get a lot of pleasure when I can make a wine and food connoisseur out of a regular customer."

Mr. Guglielmi died Monday. He was 93.

"Henri followed his passion to educate his staff and his customers," said his daughter, Josiane Trageser of Wyoming.

His efforts culminated in the Mobil five-star award for the Gourmet Room, the chairmanship of the Bacchus Society of America and the Mr. Gourmet award, Mrs. Trageser said.

Mr. Guglielmi was born in Ventimiglia, Italy. He left home at age 14 to learn the languages he would need in the hotel business.

He met his wife, Ida Ballestra, while living in London. Having mastered English, he moved on to Germany and Spain. By his early 20s, he knew five languages.

Mr. Guglielmi went to work at the Hotel de Paris in Monte Carlo on the French Riviera, where he was waiter for Sir Winston Churchill, the Prince of Wales and other luminaries. After World War II, he moved to Brittany to work at the Casino de la Baule.

In 1950, an offer from Andre Ballestra to become maitre d' at the Terrace Plaza Hotel's Gourmet Restaurant brought him, his wife and their young daughter to Cincinnati.

He also spent two years at the Eden Roc Hotel in Miami but returned to the Gourmet. He retired in 1976. A longtime west-sider, he last lived at Maple Knoll Village.

He is survived by his daughter; three grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a sister, Lina, of Ventimiglia, Italy.

Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Teresa of Avila Church in Price Hill. Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at Meyer & Geiser Funeral Home, 4989 Glenway Ave., Price Hill.
