Laura Bradford, 'lived by Golden Rule'

To many people, the front row at a concert is a bit too close to the stage.

But to Laura Horstman Bradford, a first-row seat for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra at Music Hall or Riverbend was the perfect spot.

"She just adored Erich Kunzel," said Mrs. Bradford's daughter, Lorraine Story, referring to the longtime conductor of the Cincinnati Pops. "She always liked to sit in the first row so she wouldn't miss a thing."

Mrs. Bradford, a University Heights resident and lifelong Cincinnatian, died Thursday. She was 93.

One of nine children - two of whom died in infancy - Mrs. Bradford grew up in Mohawk. During winters as a child, she and her siblings played a game called "ticklish blocks" on the frozen Miami & Erie Canal. The object was to dart across wobbling 6-foot-wide blocks cut from the ice.

She once slipped into the icy water and one of her brothers pulled her to safety, then rushed home to gather friends to witness what he felt certain would be a whipping when she got home.

"But Pop was mad at them for letting me get wet," she recalled, laughing. "I fell in, but they were the ones who got in trouble."

Mrs. Bradford, who as a young woman worked in a tailoring factory and for a company that made cigar boxes, was described by her daughter as "a real sweetheart who never had a harsh word for anyone."

"She was the same every day, always looking on the better side of life," Mrs. Story said. "She really lived by the Golden Rule."

Mrs. Bradford also leaves a nephew, Les Horstman. Her husband of 45 years, Ohmer Bradford, preceded her in death.

Private services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Bolton & Lunsford Funeral Home in Westwood. Donations may be made to Wesley Hall Home, 315 Lilienthal St., Cincinnati, Ohio, 45204.
