Viea Taylor, actress, businesswoman
Viea M. Taylor was a radio and stage actress, a businesswoman, a fund-raiser for the symphony and opera and a homemaker.
"She was very savvy and perceptive," said Mrs. Taylor's daughter, Viea Suzanne Gerwin. "Once she became your friend, she was a very loyal friend."
Mrs. Taylor, 73, of Hyde Park, died Wednesday at her home following a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Taylor was an actress in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
At WLW radio in Cincinnati, she portrayed numerous characters in dramas and children's plays and worked with such notables as Rod Serling, Earl Hamner, John Carradine and Paul Dixon.
On the stage, she worked in summer stock in New York and acted locally as a member of the Mummers Club. She starred in such plays as " Born Yesterday" and "The Glass Menagerie."
She ended her acting career when she married Keith Taylor in 1954.
When her husband died in 1983, she took over as president of Premier Industries, a paper manufacturing firm in Covington.
She also formed the Taylor Co. in downtown Cincinnati to oversee Premier Industries and a family-owned Alabama timber growing operation, Pako Plantation.
She was a member of the American Forest Paper Association and the Forest Land Owners Association.
"She became very involved in business and investing," said Mrs. Gerwin. "She was an excellent businesswoman."
Mrs. Taylor enjoyed opera and classical music and hosted many gatherings following performances by the Cincinnati Opera and Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. She also hosted fund-raising events for the symphony and opera.
In 1994, Mrs. Taylor hosted then-U.S. Senate Minority Leader Bob Dole at her home for a fund-raiser for U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine, R- Ohio.
She was a member of the Queen City Club, Cincinnati Woman's Club, The Town Club, Hyde Park Country Club and Coldstream Country Club.
Mrs. Taylor graduated from Western Hills High School in 1945 and the University of Cincinnati in 1951.
Other survivors include Mrs. Taylor's mother, Hilda Koch Messham; her sister, Paula Ann Watkins; a son, Jay Paul Taylor, and two grandchildren, Taylor Anne Gerwin and James Paul Taylor.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at All Saints Episcopal Church, Grand Vista and Parkman Place, Pleasant Ridge.
Friends may call at the family residence, 1243 W. Rookwood Drive, Hyde Park, from 5-7 tonight.
