Bob Washer, farmer, veteran
Bob Washer, 83, of Vevay, Ind., a retired farmer and a 56-year member of the American Legion, died Sunday.
Mr. Washer owned a farm near Pleasant, Ind., for many years and, after retiring, moved in 1979 to Vevay, where he was active in the community.
He served as commander of the Vevay post of the American Legion several times and also was a commander of the Vevay post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Mr. Washer served in the Army during World War II.
In addition to farming, Mr. Washer was a school bus driver 12 years and also drove a truck for the Indiana State Highway Department 16 years.
Survivors include his brother, Edmond Leo Washer, of Vevay and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Laton Newman, a real hero
As a young man, Laton Mitchell Newman was a flight engineer on the cargo plane that flew the lie detector machine to the Nuremberg Trials and the American flag into Berlin. Later, while a postal letter carrier and a real estate agent in Amelia, he saved the life of a choking child. Mr. Newman, 75, of Amelia, died Saturday. He had built St. Bernadette first baseball fields, was an active church councilman and Knights of Columbus member. He also was a charter member of the River Valley Woodcarvers. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Irene Kirby Newman; nine children; and 10 grandchildren. Mass: 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Bernadette Church, Amelia. Visitation: 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at the E.C. Joseph Klingenberg, Xavier
professor emeritus of chemistry
Joseph J. Klingenberg, a professor emeritus of chemistry at Xavier University who co-wrote "Quantitative Analysis," a chemistry textbook, died Saturday.
Mr. Klingenberg, who lived in Villa Hills, Ky., was 80.
He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and was a prisoner of war for 16 months. His POW war log is part of the National POW Museum in Andersonville, Ga. He was a member of the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame for his baseball playing days.

Vincent Eby, asbestos crusader
Vincent Vernon Eby crusaded for union-sponsored asbestos testing for local construction workers after watching his co-workers suffer from the form of lung disease caused by inhaling asbestos fibers.
The Price Hill resident died Monday from the same disease he pushed into the public's consciousness in Cincinnati in the 1970s. He was 72.
"He raised awareness about the disease before many people knew asbestos was a killer," said one of his daughters, Donna Eby, of Anderson Township. "He was a real leader and saved lives."
Mr. Eby was the first man in Cincinnati to take the diagnostic test for respiratory complications that are occupational hazards for asbestos workers. He also helped many union members and their families get money for their asbestos-related diseases.
"He always was a friend to the working man," Ms. Eby said. "He dedicated himself to working people because he was one himself."
Mr. Eby also helped establish a pension and health and welfare plan for the members of Local 8, one of the first unions for construction workers, in the 1960s.
He was a lifelong resident of Price Hill and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Survivors also include his wife of 51 years, Betty; a son, Gary Eby of Clifton; four daughters, Connie Roesch of Western Hills, Bev Eby of Delhi, Mary Beth Welch of Delhi and Donna Eby of Anderson; a brother, Jim Eby of Price Hill; and 8 grandchildren.

Betty Braswell, teacher for 30 years
Long after they left her classroom, former students would stop by to thank Betty J. Brasswell for her dedication.
The Avondale woman who taught at Cincinnati Public Schools for 30 years died Monday. She was 64.
Ms. Brasswell taught various grades at Rockdale, South Avondale and Quebec elementar- ies, said Lottie Walters, who taught with her for five years at Quebec before both women retired in 1989.
"She was a very down-to- earth person," said Ms. Walt- ers, 76, of Avondale. "She never tried to put on airs or be what she wasn't. She was a very honest and caring person and had an interest in everybody she met."
Ms. Brasswell had a reputation for being caring and loving with her students, who often brought her gifts. In return, she enjoyed baking cookies for them, especially around the holidays, Ms. Walters said.
She attended Old Woodward High School and Wilberforce University, where she was a member of the Wilberforce Mother's Board. She also served as chairwoman of the Underground Railford Association Project and was a matron with Eastern Star and a president of the Phi Delta Kappa Sorority.
Ms. Brasswell was very active at Zion Baptist Church, serving as the librarian and a member of the Missionary Board.
She is survived by a daughter, Valerie Jones of Connecticut; a son, James Braswell of Cincinnati; a sister, Mary Enoch of Cincinnati; and two grandchildren.
Services: 8 p.m. Thursday at Zion Baptist Church in Avondale. Visitation begins at 7 p.m.

Raymond Lutter, founded swim club
Known for his business expertise and fairness, Raymond A. Lutter started his own real estate company and helped create the North Hills Swim Club.
The Finneytown resident died Monday from heart complications. He was 75.
Lutter organized friends and neighbors to collect money and draft the charter to establish the swim club in the early 1960s.
He orchestrated the purchase of the property, located near the corner of Daly and North Bend roads, and served as the first president when the pool opened in 1963.
He opened his own real estate business, El-Ray Realty in 1967, after working at General Electric as a purchasing agent in the nuclear engine development department.
"He liked GE and the various projects he was involved in, but he was a man who liked to be his own boss," said his son, Jeff Lutter of Cincinnati.
Lutter was a Navy veteran of World War II and graduated from the University of Cincinnati.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Elaine; four sons, Jeff of Cincinnati, Michael of Santa Cruz, Calif., Don of Bellbrook, Ohio, and Ken of Columbus; three daughters, Cheryl White and Gail Strietmann of Cincinnati, and Carol Almond of Atlanta.
