Magnolia Mitchell, active in church
Known for her faith and good works, Magnolia J. Mitchell was one of the founding members of the Greater New Life Baptist Church in 1966.
The Roselawn resident died Tuesday. She was 64.
Mrs. Mitchell was a member of the church's missionary department, which visited the sick and shut-in, and she spread the gospel whenever possible, say friends.
Mrs. Mitchell also was known for creativity in sewing.
"She was loving and a very nurturing woman," said her son, Michael Mitchell. "She loved children; any child. She was like the neighborhood mom. All the kids in the neighborhood loved her and she loved them."
She also leaves a son, Lynard of Cincinnati; a daughter, Carolyn of Cincinnati; two brothers, Charles Brown and Gerald Mitchell, both of Cincinnati; three sisters, Barbara Brown of Cincinnati, Linda Mitchell of Cincinnati, and Brenda Mitchell of Vallejo, Calif.; and eight grandchildren.

Ida Rhodes, inspiring teacher
Ida May Rhodes' legacy of shaping young minds inspired others to celebrate a day in her honor and name a scholarship after her.
The longtime Cincinnati elementary school teacher died Thursday. She was 101.
Known as a caring and giving educator, Ms. Rhodes taught at Douglass Elementary School for 25 years. In 1954, the school's alumni association established the Ida May Rhodes Scholarship Fund in her honor. She was then assigned to South Avondale Elementary School, where she taught until her retirement in the 1960s.
A resident of Walnut Hills, Ms. Rhodes also was a member of Zion Baptist Church most of her life and taught and ran the Sunday school. Her longtime volunteer work in the community earned her many honors including "Ida May Rhodes Day," which was celebrated in the 1970s in the cities of Lincoln Heights and Cincinnati. Two years ago, the State Teacher's Retirement System also named a day in her honor. She graduated from Woodward High School and the University of Cincinnati Teachers College, where she helped to establish the first chapter of Delta Sigma Theta sorority. Ms. Rhodes is survived by three nieces, Guinivere Lisberg of Sylar, Calif., Janet Scott of Cleveland, Armenia Williams of Clifton; one nephew, Wendell Glaspie of Cleveland, and three great-nieces.

Sister Martha Foken, taught for half century
Sister Martha Louise Foken of the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati died at Mother Margaret Hall nursing home in Delhi Township Monday. She was 82.
Sister Foken was a nun for 59 years and taught for 47 years, mainly in Cincinnati. She began her teaching career at St. Martin de Porres and moved on to St. Saviour and Cure of Ars School. She also taught business for 24 years at her alma mater, Seton High School in Price Hill.
When she moved to the Motherhouse in 1990, Sister Foken volunteered in the Sisters of Charity archives.
Survivors: A sister, Sister Claire Foken of Cincinnati; four brothers, William G. Foken of Cincinnati, the Rev. Herman Foken of Muskogee, Okla., Brother Walter Foken of Notre Dame, Ind., and Joseph Foken of Cincinnati.
Visitation: 2-3 p.m. Friday in the Heritage Room at the Sisters of Charity Motherhouse in Delhi Township. A 3 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will follow in the Immaculate Conception Chapel at the Motherhouse. Memorials: Sisters of Charity Retirement Fund.

Sr. Catherine McCarthy, teacher
Sister Catherine McCarthy (formerly Sister Grace Miriam) was a Sister of Charity of Cincinnati for 65 years, serving in the areas of education and parish ministry.
Sister Catherine died Sunday at Mother Margaret Hall nursing home in Delhi Township. She was 85.
"She certainly spent her entire life looking out for the needs of others," said her brother, the Rev. Donald McCarthy, pastor of St. Antoninus Church in Western Hills.
In 1992, Sister Catherine was recognized by Pope John Paul II for her accomplishments in pastoral ministry.
Her sister, Grace Beischel of White Oak, said Sister Catherine wanted to become a nun after high school but felt she should help out her family during the Depression.
"We were always a very close family. Catherine was a caring, loving person who was always very concerned for the other person," Mrs. Beischel said.
Sister Catherine taught in Catholic schools in Price Hill, Hyde Park and Norwood and was principal of Seton High School from 1954 to 1960. She later became formation director for the Sisters of Charity. Sister Catherine served parishes in Clermont County, Columbus and Albuquerque, N.M., in 1973-80. Then she became case director for the Marriage Tribunal of the Archdiocese of Miami, Fla., preparing legal documents for annulments.
She retired to the Delhi Township Motherhouse in 1992.
Other survivors include a brother, the Very Rev. Edward McCarthy, archbishop emeritus of Miami, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. today in the Heritage Room of the Motherhouse. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 6:30 p.m. in the Immaculate Conception Chapel.

Philip Muldoon, active in community
Philip J. Muldoon Jr., of Delhi Township, former chief probation officer for Hamilton County and a criminology teacher at the University of Cincinnati for 28 years, died Sunday at Drake Center.
A graduate of the University of Louisville and its law school, Muldoon also received a master's degree in social work from the University of Louisville. He also attended Yale University and the University of Chicago.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was active in his community. He was a geriatric case worker for Community Services West, and served as chairperson of the Mental Health West Board. He was chairperson and member of Our Lady of Victory Education Commission, a board member of Boys Hope and for 25 years was Santa for the Lawyers Club.
He leaves his wife, Maxine Fries Muldoon; three sons, Philip Muldoon III, of Solon, Ohio, Sean Muldoon, of Nashville, Tenn., and Brian Muldoon, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a brother, Dr. James Muldoon; five sisters, Catherine Ernst, Mary Heintz, Ursula Robertson, Margaret Mulligan and Pat Embs, and five grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7:15 p.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Victory Church, 810 Neeb Road, Delhi Township, followed by Mass at 7:30 p.m.
