Born in Delphos, Ohio, Mrs. Duffy came to Cincinnati at 18 to become a nurse. She graduated from Mount Saint Joseph College in 1943 with a bachelor's degree in nursing.

While working at Good Samaritan Hospital, she met her future husband, Dr. F. Paul Duffy, and eventually quit nursing to be a homemaker.

Mrs. Duffy was known to be a generous gift-giver, buying for everyone she knew everywhere she went. She kept her collection in a "gift room" over her bedroom so she would always have presents on hand for birthdays or other occasions.

"She was very giving and always tried to make things nice for others," said Eunice Bumiller, 51, a longtime friend. "She loved to take others to the arts and the ballet and theater. She enjoyed watching them enjoy themselves and took great pleasure in giving to others."

Jean Wallen Frolo, Withrow High teacher

As a child, Jennifer Frolo didn't have to look far to find her perfect role model.

After all, her mother, Jean Marie Wallen Frolo, lived in the same house.

Jennifer Frolo, now Jennifer Baker, admired everything about her mother, from her solid work ethic as a high school home economics teacher to being an understanding parent and friend.

Mrs. Frolo sewed a daughter's wedding gown. She was a union activist who went on strike with her fellow teachers. And she encouraged her children to seek jobs that would help other people.

"She was very outgoing. She had a wonderful, infectious laugh," said Mrs. Baker, who lives in Covington. "She was very dedicated. She would have done everything for us."

Jean Marie Wallen Frolo, 72, of Waynesville, Ohio, formerly of Fort Mitchell, Ky., died Wednesday after an extended illness.

She was a teacher with Cincinnati Public Schools and spent close to 20 years at Withrow High School, where she taught home economics.

Mrs. Frolo was an active member of the Cincinnati Federation of Teachers and enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking and reading.

She also enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and the Caribbean.

In 1995, she became ill with heart problems. A stroke left her blind in 1997 and she was diagnosed with cancer in 1999.

Mrs. Baker, an eighth-grade teacher, also credits her mother for being her inspiration.

She said she loved school because of her mother and became a regional Kentucky Post Spelling Bee winner in 1978.

Mrs. Baker continues to honor her mother by serving as a judge for the Kentucky Post Spelling Bee.

"She was a caring, dedicated and intelligent teacher," Mrs. Baker said of her mother.

"She was so strong - she was the strongest woman I have ever known."

Besides her daughter, Mrs. Frolo is also survived by her husband, Thomas P. Frolo; daughters, Suzanne M. Lammers of Hendersonville, Tenn., and Theresa K. Karr of West Chester, Ohio; a son, Thomas Frolo Jr. of Burlington, Ky.; a brother, Eugene Wallen of Clarksville, Tenn.; sisters, Sarah Jane Mowen of Dayton, Ohio, Ellen Carter of Frenchburg, Alice Bandy of Evansville, Ind., and Norma Grove of Vandalia, Ohio; and four grandchildren.
