Dr. J. Kaney Hayes,
Xavier educator
Dr. J. Kaney Hayes, a Xavier University educator, national labor arbitrator and decorated war veteran, died Friday. He was 82.

"Irish Peacemaker is the best way to describe Kaney Hayes," said Dr. Lawrence Donnelly, a senior fellow in Economics and Human Resources at Xavier. "He tried to build consensus."

"Our dad was the most remarkable man I have ever known. He was dedicated to his family, to education and had a passion for living," said his daughter, Kathy McLaughlin.

Dr. Hayes joined Xavier in 1958 as professor of business administration and economics. He was named chair of the department of management and industrial relations in 1961. He served as associate dean of the College of Business Administration from 1967 to 1978 and retired in 1988.

"Kaney Hayes was one of the finest teachers I ever had," said Thomas H. Siemers, a 1953 XU graduate and president of Franklin Savings and Loan. "He taught economics but the impact he made on me went way beyond the technical aspects of economics and business. He was a powerful influence just by the way he went about his daily work. I have valued him as a teacher, a friend and business associate."

Author of "Some Economic Estimates of Job Disruption," Dr. Hayes' arbitration cases have been published in the Commerce Clearing House Arbitration Reports and the Bureau of National Affairs Labor Arbitration Reports. He also has published articles in the American Management Association Journal.

He was a member of the board of directors of the Industrial Relations Research Association; the Academy of Management; Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service's arbitration panel; National Academy of Arbitrators; American Arbitration Association; Public Employment Disputes Settlement Panel; and the American Society of Training Directors.

He also served on the (Cincinnati) Mayor's Committee of 100 (1966-68); the board of directors for Cincinnati Youth Organization or Neighborhood Youth Corps (1962-66); chairman of the board of education for St. Antoninus parish (Cincinnati,1968); a member of the Cincinnati Archdiocesan World Justice and Peace Committee (1976-79).

During World War II, Dr. Hayes served the U.S. Navy, with the 7th Fleet in the Pacific Theater. He earned the Silver Star, Purple Heart and a number of battle awards for valor in combat.

Helen Bacevich, Roger Bacon's team mom

Helen L. Bacevich, team mother to hundreds of Roger Bacon High School football players, died Sunday in Blue Ash after having a cerebral aneurysm. She was 89.

Mrs. Bacevich had one son of her own, Bernard, and hundreds more who considered her their second mother.

Her husband, Bron C. Bacevich, was the legendary Roger Bacon High School football coach. The school's stadium is named in his honor, and he ranks as the winningest coach in Ohio prep history.

Mrs. Bacevich supported Roger Bacon teams at scores of games, cookouts, boosters events, and pep rallies.

"She could remember players from 30 or 40 years ago," her son said. "She really was like a team mother."

Mrs. Bacevich's influence extended to the wives of the young coaches who followed in his father's footsteps, Bernard Bacevich said.

"The wives looked to my mom on how to be a coach's wife. It's hard when the fans are yelling at your husband," he said.

Her passions were her grandchildren, Tonya and Michael, and her great-grandson, Blake, her son said. And she loved to play bingo, going to Evendale hall up to four times a week, sometimes playing as many as 18 cards at once, often distributing her winnings among her grandchildren and great-grandson.

The family moved to Cincinnati when her husband was named Roger Bacon High School coach in 1954. She worked as an administrative assistant for Roberts-Morris Chevrolet and Penn Mutual Life Insurance.

Her husband, who was Roger Bacon coach until 1974, died in 1993.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Hodapp Funeral Home, 6401 Hamilton Ave., College Hill. The funeral is set for noon Thursday at the Church of the Little Flower, 5560 Kirby Ave., in Mount Airy.

Memorials are suggested to the Bron Bacevich Memorial Fund, c/o Roger Bacon High School, 4320 Vine St., Cincinnati, Ohio 45217.
