Pasquale's owner, Lou Roberto,
loved pizza business and horses

Lou Roberto was one of those people everybody knew - someone who forever touched others with his humor and generosity.

"Everyone had a 'Lou story,"' said his daughter, LuAnn Roberto.

Mr. Roberto, 72, of Covedale, died Saturday at Mercy Hospital.

The owner-operator of Pasquale's Pizza in Newport for 43 years, he and his cousins also opened Pasquale's in Cincinnati, then several franchise outlets.

"He was the original pizza man," said son Vince.

The store was most important, his children said, but many also knew he loved to gamble.

"To really know Lou, you had to be at the crap table with him," said his daughter, Gina Roberto.

Mr. Roberto owned several race horses and was active in the racing community. He also, in 1978, won a second prize worth $5,000 in the Ohio Lottery and he organized annual Monte Carlos and spaghetti dinners for his parish, St. Antonio Chapel.

He was preceded in death by his son, Tony.

Other survivors include his wife of 49 years, Fern Roberto; another daughter, Tina Kroeger; and five grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Antonio Church, Cincinnati. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Dalbert & Woodruff Funeral Home, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
