Dr. Melvin Weber, long-time physician
For more than 30 years, Dr. Melvin J. Weber was a family physician in Ludlow, Ky.
He delivered hundreds of babies and had thousands of patients but still managed to always found time for his family, said a son, former Kentucky Post Sports Editor Daniel Weber of Tustin Ranch, Calif.
"Even though he was a solo practitioner and often worked seven days a week, he was always there for us," Dan Weber said.
Dr. Weber, 89, of Fort Wright, died Tuesday at St. Charles Care Center in Covington.
He grew up in Ludlow and Bromley and retained his small-town hospitality during his practice. He was a flight surgeon from 1942-45 during World War II.
After the war, Dr. Weber concentrated on treating his patients and raising his family. Another son, Robert Weber of Lakeside Park, followed in his footsteps and also became a family physician.
Dr. Weber closed his family practice in 1972. He also taught at the University of Cincinnati for many years.
Other survivors are his wife of 59 years, Dorothy Dillon Weber; two other sons, Richard Weber of Cleveland and Eugene Weber of Fort Wright; daughters, Mary Ann George of Perth, Australia, Clare Reuhl of Lakeside Park, Melissa Broering of Greenville, S.C., and Ginny Ruberg of Fort Wright; and 14 grandchildren.

S. Ernest Hively, township clerk, farmer
S. Ernest Hively, 87, of Reily Township in Butler County, a township clerk for 43 years and a farmer and school bus driver, died Tuesday.
"He was a delightful fellow," said Rev. Robert Foster of Oxford. "The thing I remember most about him is that he always had a big smile on his face and every time you saw him, you felt good."
In addition to serving as township clerk, Mr. Hively was a member of numerous area organizations, including Butler Landmark Corp., Butler County Fair Board, Butler Farm Bureau Federation, Reily Township Farm Bureau, Butler County Extension Advisory Committee, Butler County Park Board, Butler County Home Administration and Springdale Cemetery Board.
"He had a multitude of friends," said Rev. Foster. "He was extremely friendly with everybody. He never saw a stranger. He was very kind and thoughtful."
A life-long resident of Reily Township, Mr. Hively graduated from Reily High School and attended Miami University. He was an efficient and effective township clerk and farmer, said Rev. Foster.
"He was very thorough as a clerk and everything had to be in order," he said. "It was the same way in his farming. All his rows were just as straight as a string."
Survivors include Mr. Hively's wife of 64 years, Lola Wehr Hively, and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at the Smith and Ogle Funeral Home, 101 W. Church St., Oxford.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Howard 'Shorty' Kabler, former Ripley mayor
Whether he was delivering the mail, driving children home from school or representing his community as an elected official, Howard L. "Shorty" Kabler served the public.
The Ripley, Ohio, resident died Monday in Maysville, Ky. He was 77.
During his tenure as mayor of Ripley for two terms from 1968 to 1976 and a village council member from 1976 to 1979, the city installed natural gas lines in the city for the first time and secured federal funding to improve sewer systems.
Before that, the community's raw sewage was dumped into the Ohio River, said his son, Michael Kabler.
"He was a real friend to nature and touched a lot of lives. He's always been there to help people," Michael Kabler said. "He was a person of high integrity and honesty."
Mr. Kabler was a farmer, retired rural mail carrier and school bus driver for the Ripley School District. He also served as a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Ripley, where he was parish council president for 17 years, and was an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus.
He served in World War II in France and Germany, and was wounded in battle before returning home in late 1944.
Earlier this month, he was indicted into the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame and was a big supporter of establishing the Southern Ohio Veterans Home, which will be constructed in Georgetown, Ohio, next spring.
Mr. Kabler is survived by his wife, Mary Helen of Ripley; a son, Michael of Westerville, Ohio; two daughters, Angela Bridges of Cincinnati and Jackie Hansen of Ripley and six grandchildren.
Services: Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the St. Michael Catholic Church in Ripley. Visitation: 5-9 tonight at the Cahall Funeral Home in Ripley.

Mary A. Schwegman, a nurse's aide for 20 years at the Sisters of St. Francis Convent, Oldenburg, Ind., died Wednesday at her home in Batesville, Ind. She was 48.
She was supervisor of the Franklin County Soil and Water Conservation District and a member of the Holy Family Church Ladies Society.
She leaves her husband, Louis Schwegman; a daughter, Sharon and a son, Michael, all of Oldenburg; her mother,, Rita Willhelm, of Cedar Grove, Ind.; three sisters, Emma Werner, Betty Sullivan and Karen Grubbs; and four brothers, Tom, Francis, David and Ed Willhelm, all of Cedar Grover, Ind.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Family Church. Visitation will be 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Weigel Funeral Home, Batesville.
