Ella Miller of Wyoming, maybe world's oldest person

Funeral services will be held this morning for a former Cincinnati resident some considered to be the world's oldest person.

Ella Miller was believed to be either 118 or 119, although no known reliable birth certificate exists. The Guinness Book of World Records did not recognize her.

Mrs. Miller lived in suburban Wyoming from her teens until she was 106 and listed her birth date as either Dec. 6, 1880, or Dec. 6, 1881, said Jon Patterson, chief operating officer of Thompson, Hall and Jordan Funeral Home.

"She was alleged to be 118 or 119, as best we can recollect," Patterson said. "She left town to live with her niece in 1989."

Services for Mrs. Miller, who died of congestive heart failure Tuesday at her niece's home in Vienna, Va., will be held at 11:30 a.m. at Thompson, Hall and Jordan Funeral Home in Forest Park. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the service.

While Mrs. Miller resided locally, she generously donated her time to the community, Patterson recalled. A housewife, she volunteered at the Valley Interfaith Food and Clothing Center and the YMCA and served on the Women's Committee at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Woodlawn.

Her husband, Isaac Miller, died in 1943, Patterson said. The couple had no children. Mrs. Miller will be buried beside him at Beech Grove Cemetery in Wyoming.

On Nov. 2, the oldest living person with authenticated birth records, Eva Morris, 114, died in a British nursing home.

She was 79.

Mrs. Taft, who had a home in Kenwood, married then-U.S. Rep. Robert A. Taft Jr. in 1969, a year before he was elected to the U.S. Senate.

She helped start and was a longtime supporter of the Hudson Valley Writers Center in Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.

She also was on the board of the Anderson Family Foundation, which supports Cincinnati charities, and the Hitchcock Center for the Environment in Amherst, Mass.

Easy-going Bill Strayer took life in stride

An easy-going, quiet man, Bill Strayer took things in stride, said his daughter, Nancy Perisich.

"He was just the kind of person who took whatever anybody gave him and never complained."

But one of the most memorable stories about her father, she said, was about the time he helped his Ohio Wesleyan football team defeat a powerful Michigan squad - by giving up his pants.

One of Ohio Wesleyan's star players split his pants at a key moment in the game. Mr. Strayer, a reserve on the team, was the same size as the star. He nobly shed his pants and wrapped a blanket around himself as his pants led Ohio Wesleyan to victory.

Mr. Strayer, 92, died in his sleep Sunday at Mercy Anderson Hospital.

"He was pretty tough," said Al Wettstein, a fellow member of the Anderson Township Historical Society for a number of years. "He had a leg amputated at age 89 and then learned to walk again" with the aid of a prosthetic leg.

"He was a hero to my sister and (me)," said his daughter, Sue Ward. "He never complained. He just went on with life and lived it to the fullest."

Born in DeGraff, he lived in Mariemont for 25 years before moving to Mount Washington in 1977. He was a business forms salesman for more than 40 years with Uforma/Shelby Business Forms, retiring in 1988 at the age of 80.

He served three terms on the Mariemont Board of Education, was a member of Hyde Park Community Methodist Church for 65 years, and had been a member of the board of managers of Emanuel Community Center.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Perisich of Tucson, Ariz., and Mrs. Ward of Farmington, Mich.; a sister, Elizabeth Banks of Canton; and two grandchildren. His wife, Antoinette, died in 1986.

Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Elden A. Good Funeral Home, 2620 Erie Ave., Hyde Park. Burial will be Thursday in DeGraff. Memorial service is 2 p.m. Friday at Hyde Park Community United Methodist Church.
