Rev. Charles Meyer, priest and mystery writer

Rev. Charles Meyer, 53, of Austin, Texas, a native of Cincinnati who became an Episcopal priest and mystery book writer, was killed Nov. 13 in an auto accident near Giddings, Texas .

Rev. Meyer was vice president of operations at St. David's Medical Center in Austin.

He was well known in mystery writers' circles for the Lucas Holt murder mystery books. His last book in the series was "Death Angel." He also wrote non-fiction books and articles.

Rev. Meyer earned a bachelor's degree from Earlham College in Richmond, Ind., a master's of divinity from Union Theological Seminary, a master's in educational guidance and counseling from the University of Bridgeport, and certificates in correctional counseling and pastoral counseling.

He was ordained an Episcopal priest in 1974.

Rev. Meyer was active in pastoral education in Austin at the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest and the Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary.

In 1985 he was named one of Austin's 10 outstanding citizens and in 1991 won the Austin Writers' League Violet Crown Award.

He also co-founded Hospice Austin and was deeply involved in the People's Community Clinic, Meals on Wheels, and Planned Parenthood.

Survivors include his wife, Debbi, who was seriously injured in the accident; his daughter, Michel; his parents, Carl and Martha Meyer of Loveland, and his brother, Bud.

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the Lodge Care Center, 9370 Union Cemetery Road, Loveland, where his parents reside.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice Austin, Meals on Wheels, or St. David's Healthcare Foundation.

Albert Wermeling, long-time Elsmere mayor

For 30 years Albert Wermeling was a fixture in the council chambers in Elsmere, Ky., serving either as mayor or a council member.

"He probably would have preferred to have died sitting in council chambers," said Mr. Wermeling's brother, George Wermeling, the former mayor of Covington. "That was his second family. Other people hold office and come and go. But to him, it was just a continual thing."

Mr. Wermeling, 81, of Elsmere, died Wednesday night. He was 81.

Mr. Wermeling first took office in 1970 and retired last year after moving to Covington. He helped turn Elsmere from a little rural town into a "nice, elegant suburban city," his brother said. He also fought in hand-to-hand battles on the Pacific front during World War II and was a salesman for Glier's Meats in Covington until 1987. His wife, Coletta, died in 1988.

Other survivors include a daughter, Ellen Machlied, of Villa Hills; a brother, Gilbert Wermeling, of Covington; a sister, Ida Bruggen, of Covington; and four grandchildren.

Mass: 11 a.m. Monday at St. Henry Church, Elsmere. Visitation: 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence, Ky. Burial: St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas, Ky. Memorials: To charity.

Raymond McCoy, started XU grad school

Raymond F. McCoy, 87, of Finneytown, who founded Xavier University's graduate school and was a key member of the university's administration and faculty for 40 years, died Saturday of complications from Alzheimer's disease.

When Mr. McCoy started Xavier's graduate school in 1946, it had five departments and 135 students. When he retired in 1985, it had 11 departments and 3,600 students.

Mr. McCoy also was a member of several international organizations. He served on the United States National Commission for UNESCO - the United Nations' education and scientific organization - for 17 years and was president of the Cincinnati Association for the United Nations.

He also was a member of the U.S. State Department's Advisory Committee on Voluntary Foreign Aid and was president of the Catholic Association for International Peace.

Mr. McCoy was devoted to his wife of 59 years, Margaret, their six children and seven grandchildren.

At age 25, Mr. McCoy in 1939 was the youngest ever to receive a doctorate in school administration from the University of Cincinnati.

He became an English teacher at Western Hills High School in 1936 and a Cincinnati Board of Education assistant superintendent in 1939.

During World War II, Mr. McCoy served in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include daughters, Kathleen McCoy of Finneytown, Peggy Hall of North College Hill and Patty Shoemaker of Fort Pierce, Fla., and sons, Tom McCoy of Nashville, Tenn., John McCoy of Loveland and Jim McCoy of Murray, Ky.

Visitation: 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at Hodapp Funeral Home, 6041 Hamilton Ave., College Hill.

Memorial Mass: 10 a.m. Tuesday at Bellarmine Chapel on the Xavier University campus.
