Holden Wilson
The Holden and Caroline Wilson Golf Scholarship exemplified the life of Holden Wilson Jr: A devoted golfer, philanthropist and family man, Mr. Wilson established the scholarship at his alma mater, Miami University, to both honor his parents and help a deserving student pay for college.
"He loved to see kids succeed," said his son, Holden Wilson III. "It was more than just writing out a check to him. He wanted to give them an opportunity when they wouldn't otherwise have had an opportunity." Mr. Wilson, a resident of Walnut Hills for many years, died Dec. 7 in Charleston, S.C., after a brief illness. He was 72.
After graduating Miami University in 1952, he joined Merrill Lynch as a stock broker. At the time, he was the youngest stock broker hired by the firm. He would stay there for 40 years.
"Holden was one of a kind," said Robert Anning, who Mr. Wilson mentored in 1967. "Neither his wit and humor nor the kindness and patience he showed to us who worked for and with him will ever be duplicated."
A devoted Miami University fan, he served on the athletic department's Red & White Club Board of Directors for five years and founded the Miami athletics fan club, Tilohawi. Basketball coach Charlie Coles dedicat ed the team's Dec. 2 victory over Wisconsin-Green Bay to Mr. Wilson.
Mr. Wilson was a passionate golfer and supporter of the game, serving on the Greater Cincinnati Golf Association Board of Governors and as administrator of the USGA Amateur Sectional Championships at Camargo Club. He also established the trophy for the Greater Cincinnati Girls Metropolitan Championship.
Since age 10, he supported the Cincinnati Babies Milk Fund as a volunteer, committee member and sponsor. Most recently, he co-sponsored "Eden Pork," an event to benefit both the Babies Milk Fund and the Big Pig Gig . He also was a member of the Society of Colonial Wars, and was elected governor general this year, overseeing the national society's annual meeting in Cincinnati in May.
He is survived by his wife, Sally; two daughters, Caroline Painter Wilson and Laura Welles Wilson; and his son, Holden III.
