Refugee Don Delev spoke against Communism

Don Delev fled Bulgaria under a hail of gunfire, and spent the rest of his life helping fellow refugees begin a new life in his adopted America.

Mr. Delev, 72, died at home in Mount Washington Wednesday after a long illness.

"He was one of the first people to escape from behind the Iron Curtain," said his son, Greg. "Refugees from Eastern Europe would come to Cincinnati because they had heard of him. He would help them find a job and a place to live."

"There must be 250 families living in Ohio because of him," said Janet Delev, his wife of 46 years.

Mr. Delev also helped many Greater Cincinnati families who adopted Bulgarian children, bridging the gap between the two very different cultures with patience, understanding and good humor, said Janet Curran of Anderson Township, who adopted twin Bulgarian girls with her husband, Steve.

"We always called him our unofficial cultural consultant," she said.

Twice arrested by Bulgaria's Communist government - once for singing "Chattanooga Choo-Choo" - Mr. Delev decided to escape from prison camp after 30 inmates were rounded up and shot by guards.

A patriot who loved his adopted country and his native homeland, Mr. Delev frequently spoke out against Communism and on behalf of All God's Children, a non-profit adoption and relief agency. He counted Gov. Bob Taft among his many friends.

In addition to his wife and son Greg, other survivors include two daughters, Maria and Elizabeth; a son, Michael; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchildren.

Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, 5950 Kellogg Ave., California, with a short family service afterward.

Memorials may be given to All God's Children, 4114 NE Fremont, Portland OR 97212.
