Paul England, 48, fought disabling heart ills
Paul England figured a lifelong heart condition would kill him early, so he never had children of his own.
But that didn't stop him from becoming a father figure to the many youngsters in his life.
"Children were just drawn to him," said Mr. England's sister, Beverly Fugazzi of Crescent Springs, Ky. "My boys love race cars and he did that with them. His girlfriend's children played in a band and he always attended their concerts. He went to my granddaughter's ballet recital. He was such a neat person. But he knew he didn't have long to live."
Mr. England, 48, of Independence, Ky., died Saturday at his home.
Mr. England had retired from his job as a plumber and construction worker. Ms. Fugazzi said her brother's disabling heart condition prevented him from continuing to work, although he had wished to do so.
Mr. England had been on a list for a heart transplant for several years, according to his sister. A donor heart never became available.
She said he had some hope several years ago when he was given a medication that increased the oxygen supply to his heart. However, she said he was not able to afford the prescription drug and no longer took it.
"He knew he didn't have long," said Ms. Fugazzi. "He had even gotten the dimensions and was going to build his own coffin."
Other survivors include his mother, Lillian England of Florence, Ky.; fiance, Margret Ryan Green of Latonia, Ky.; and two brothers, John England of Berea, Ky., and Roger England of Columbus, Ohio.
Visitation: noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Chambers & Grubbs Funeral Home in Independence. Services: 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial is in Independence Cemetery.

Murl Fox, farm and family veterinarian
When Murl Fox took over his father's veterinary practice in 1945, he was one of the few small-animal doctors in southeastern Indiana. Veterinarians were few and far between in rural communities, and most specialized in treating farm animals, not family pets.
Like his father, he treated farm animals, and even owned a farm where he kept horses, cows and pigs. But his real love was dogs and cats, and he frequently adopted the strays he couldn't find homes for.
His reputation spread and soon he was making house calls from Lawrenceburg, Ind., to Petersburg, Ky., to North Bend, Ohio.
Dr. Fox, 83, a lifelong Aurora, Ind., resident, died Dec. 24 at Dearborn County Hospital.
"He really changed veterinarian medicine in Dearborn County," said his sister, Jean Bauer. "Before Murl started practicing, most people didn't think about getting surgery for their pets. This was farm country."
His son, Jeff Fox, grew up with lots of dogs and cats his dad brought home.
"If he had a farmer that had too many cats or too many dogs and wanted to put some to sleep, he'd bring them home until he could find a home for them," Jeff Fox said.
Dr. Fox served on the Aurora school board, the Dearborn County Salvation Army and the Dearborn County Red Cross. He was elected to two terms as the Dearborn County coroner. He also started Dearborn County's first rabies clinic, in 1950, which is still in operation, Mrs. Bauer said.
He is also survived by a daughter, Ann Fox Knopp; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. His wife, Marjorie, died in 1974.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Rullman Funeral Home, 219 Mechanic St., Aurora. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Rullman Funer al Home. Memorials may be given to Aurora Emergency Unit or Dearborn County Humane Society.
