Catherine Huheey, teacher and principal
Catherine Smythe Huheey was a teacher at a time when that was one of the few careers open to women. But she didn't let that keep her from advancing in her profession or as a person.
Mrs. Huheey, formerly of Glen Este, died Wednesday at her home in Lenoir City, Tenn. She was 93.
Mrs. Huheey, born in Greencastle, Ind., spent most of her career teaching in Anderson Township and Clermont County.
"She thoroughly enjoyed it," said her son, James E. Huheey of Lenoir City. "When the students would come up to her in the hall and say, 'Hi, Mrs. Huheey,' it just would tickle her pink."
Huheey said he once had his mother as a teacher in the eighth grade, when she worked as a substitute at Mount Carmel-Glen Este School.
"The thing I remember most is we weren't rote memorizing this, that or the other thing. We were just learning things that were fun," he said.
Huheey said his mother influenced his decision to become an educator. He recently retired as a professor of chemistry at the University of Maryland at College Park.
Mrs. Huheey started teaching at age 18 at Cherry Grove School in Anderson Township. She taught in the West Clermont Schools for 35 years.
She was named the first principal of Brantner Elementary School when it was built, and retired in 1976 after 13 years there.
In 1955, she was elected to membership in the Alpha Chi chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honor society for women educators.
Mrs. Huheey received a bachelor's degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1941 and a master's in education from Miami University in 1962.
