George Hamilton, former Franklin police chief
George M. Hamilton III, former City of Franklin police chief and council member, was dedicated to his community and the people who live there.

He died Wednesday at the age of 60.

Born in Cincinnati, Hamilton joined the Army in 1958 and served in Germany and Korea as a military police officer and in the Army's criminal investigation division. He joined the Franklin police in 1967, was promoted to sergeant and, in 1978, was named chief - a position he held until his retirement in 1988.

He also served four years as a member of the Franklin City Council and did years of volunteer work for the library system there.

One son, Roderick, a police sergeant in Yuma, Ariz., said that what set his father apart was his dedication.

"He took a real sense of ownership in the city," he said. "He always took a personal pride in knowing that people could go out in the evening in Franklin and feel safe.

"He had that same high level of dedication toward family. It was because of his example that I took up a career in law enforcement."

Mr. Hamilton also was a member of Russell McElfresh Post 149 of the American Legion, the Fraternal Order of Police and the CID Agents Association.

Survivors include his wife, Marita Metzger Hamilton; two other sons, Derrick Hamilton, a gunnery sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps, and Kenrick Hamilton, a volunteer firefighter for the City of Franklin; six sisters, Patricia Wilson of Chicago, Gail Boreing of Cincinnati, Susan Balser of Cincinnati, Sarah Leinberger of Columbus, Cheryl Henke of Cincinnati, and Beverly Shelton of Cincinnati, and five grandchildren.

Graveside service is set for 3 p.m. Saturday at Woodhill Cemetery. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Eaton-Anderson-Unglesby Funeral Home, 1357 E. Second St., Franklin.

Donations are suggested to the George M. Hamilton III Police Training Facility, in care of Community National Bank, Conover Drive and E. Second Street, Franklin, Ohio 45005.
