Katie Byrnes, 5, a girl who 'radiated love'

Five-year-old Katie Byrnes was "radiant," says her mother.

"Energy and love would be absorbed into her little body, and she would radiate it back in a human glow," Jayne Byrnes of West Chester, Ohio, said.

Katie, born with numerous physical problems, including hydrocephalus, Goldenhar syndrome, scoliosis, feeding delays and deafness, died Tuesday after a problem developed with her brain shunt.

Despite her problems, Katie was determined to overcome them and in so doing had a remarkable ability to spread warmth and joy to others, said her parents.

"Because she could not voice, Katie communicated with her hands," said her father, John Byrnes. "And when she was really excited, she would wiggle her head, arms, her whole body.

"At first, her wiggling was pure emotion of a little girl. As she grew, though, it became more of a personal vocabulary."

Mrs. Byrnes said because Katie loved going to church, "we joked that one day Katie would become a nun and probably be known as 'Sister Wiggles."'

Katie attended Lakota's Early Childhood Center for three years and was featured in a video that was part of the Cincinnati Inclusion Net work awards program last year.

She also participated in the Shared Reading Program sponsored by Cincinnati's Deaf Institute.

"Katie was the beneficiary of much love and affection from groups such as General Electric's ELFUNs and Children's Hospital, as well as from countless individuals throughout the country," said Mrs. Byrnes.

"But I think she gave back double to those who gave to her, with her gifts of love, enthusiasm and uplifting spirit."

Katie's liver and kidneys were donated for transplantation.

"I think this last gift is very symbolic of Katie's life," said John Byrnes. "Her one little life multiplies by two - to help two other children continue to live."

Friends are invited to a celebration of Katie's life from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at St. John the Evangelist Church in West Chester, followed immediately by funeral services.

Memorials may be made to the Deaf Institute, 3515 Warsaw Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio, 45205.

Hodapp Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
