Kenneth R. Johnstone, Boone County Schools superintendent

Kenneth R. Johnstone was known for his interest in kids.

Superintendent of Boone County Schools from 1982 to 1987, he had a career in education that spanned 38 years and two states. At the time of his death, he was a substitute teacher for the school district and chairman of the Christian education department of Kenwood Baptist Church, Cincinnati.

Mr. Johnstone, 62, of Union, died Monday at University Hospital in Cincinnati of a rare brain disease.

Mr. Johnstone began teaching in 1961 at Hughes High School in Cincinnati. He excelled as a teacher, then moved into school administration, serving as assistant principal at Schwab Junior High and Aiken High School in Cincinnati.

In 1977, he moved to Kentucky to become principal at Boone County. During his term as superintendent, Mr. Johnstone was selected as one of four Northern Kentuckians to participate in the first Leadership Kentucky program. The program is designed to develop leaders with a broad perspective of Kentucky's future. Mr. Johnstone served on two state-wide organiz at ions: the Educational Innovation Incentive Fund Advisory Committee and the Kentucky Council on Economic Education.

In 1986, he was elected to the board of directors for the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce and was named executive director of the Kentucky Association of School Administrators, which represents school administrators and lobbies for education improvements in the state legislature.

Survivors include his wife, Jo Ann Johnstone; sons, Ralph C. Johnstone of Cincinnati and Todd W. Johnstone of Dixon, Tenn; his mother, Helen L. Johnstone of Florence; a sister, Carol Ann Sutter of Union; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at noon Friday. Burial will be in Hopeful Lutheran Cemetery, Florence. Memorials are suggested to Kenwood Baptist Church, 8341 Kenwood Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45236. Stith Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.

Howard Ulma Allen, 87, of Murphy, N.C., formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Tuesday at his home. He was owner and operator of Allens Barber Shop in Erlanger and a former member of the Erlanger VFW and American Legion posts. He was a member of Erlanger Christian Church Disciples of Christ.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Alcorn Allen; a daughter, Barbara Jo Cordle of Petersburg; brothers, Johnny Allen, Jennings Allen, Carvel Allen, Glendon Allen and Charles Allen, all of Richmond; a sister, Anna Ramsey of Florence; a granddaughter and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to Good Shepherd Home Health and Hospice, P. O. Box 465, Hayesville, N.C. 28904. Townson Rose Funeral Home, Murphy, is handling arrangements.

Patti Kennedy Blanchet, 57, of Villa Hills, died at 11:50 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a retired reservationist with American Airlines.

Survivors include her husband, Michael Blanchet; a son, Steven A. Blanchet of Villa Hills; brothers, Dan Kennedy of Fort Wright and Tom Kennedy of Lakeside Park; and sisters, Kathleen Kennedy of Tuscon, Ariz., Wilma Kennedy of Fort Thomas and Jody Anderson of Covington.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Horizon House, 735 River Road, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075.

Earnest Burns, 91, of Carrollton, died Tuesday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital in Carrollton. He was a retired farmer. His wives, Dora Mathis Burns and Julia Couch Burns, a daughter, Irene Jones, and stepson, Kash Burns, all preceded him in death.

Survivors include daughters, Opal Banks Robbins, Sudie Mefford and Betty Hearn, all of Carrollton; sons, Herman Burns, John Burns and Edward Burns, all of Carrollton; a sister, Lucille Mitchell of Florida; 14 grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in English Cemetery.

Kathryn Redman Delph, 79, of Dry Ridge, died Tuesday at her home. She was a homemaker, a former employee of Williamstown Manufacturing Co. and a member of Sherman Church of Christ. She was a former member of Sherman-Mount Zion Homemakers. Her husband, Brian Delph, died in 1993.

Survivors include a son, Charles Blaine Delph Sr. of Dry Ridge; sisters, Ruth Sullivan of Williamstown and Emma Simpson of Dry Ridge; a granddaughter and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Williamstown Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

John C. Feuerborn, 53, of Hebron, died Tuesday at his home after an extended illness. He was vice president of Mathews Book Co. His wife, Janet Feuerborn, preceded him in death.

Survivors include a son, Eric D. Feuerborn of Cincinnati; a daughter, Holly C. Tabler of Cincinnati; sisters, Betty Norton of  Oklahoma City, Joanne Farmer of Boswell, Okla., and Mary Miner of Denver; and his fiancee, Cindy Gallagher of Hebron.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Saturday. Cremation will be at Baxter Cremation Co., Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2A, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Richard E. Greenholz, 89, of Cincinnati, formerly of Newport, died Tuesday in Cincinnati. He was a retired manager of the manufacturing budget with Procter & Gamble, Cincinnati, and a member of the board of trustees of both the United Cerebral Palsy Association and Social Health Association.

He was involved with United Appeal and Citizens Drug Abuse committees, and was a member of the Kenwood Country Club, Cincinnati. Mr. Greenholz was born in Southgate, Ky., and was a star football player at Newport High School.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah Blank Greenholz; two nieces and a nephew.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hyde Park Community United Methodist Church, Cincinnati. Burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Evergreen Cemetery Chapel, Southgate.

Teresa L. Spencer Hollingsworth, 55, of Newport, died at 9:10 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a retired nurse with Ivy  Woods Health Care Center, Cincinnati.

Survivors include her husband, Carl Hollingsworth; son, Christopher Hollingsworth of Newport; mother, Sylvia Cope of Newport; and sister, Sue Tiemeyer of Newport.

Sylvia F. Hornbeck, 82, of  Taylor Mill, died at 7 a.m. Tuesday at her home. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Robert Hornbeck, died on July 15.

Survivors include a sister, Evelyn Wells of Middletown, Ohio; nieces and nephews.

Gloria McQuown Mile, 78, of Bellevue, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Duke Mile; a son, Chuck Mile of Bellevue; and two grandchildren.

Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Anthony Church, Bellevue. Mrs. Mile bequeathed her body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue, is handling arrangements.

William R. "Bill" Miller, 73, of Burlington, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

He was a bus operator with Dixie Transit Authority and Transit Authority of Northern Kentucky, and was a vehicle inspector with the Boone County Sheriff's Office. He was a member of Florence Baptist Church and Good Faith Masonic Lodge No. 95 F&AM, and was an Army veteran of the Korean War. A son, Billy Miller Jr., died in 1975.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Louden Miller; sons, Darrel Miller and Randy Miller, both of Burlington; a brother, John Miller of Florence; and sisters, Dova Lee Eades and Lucille Eades, both of Florence.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Friday and 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Mary A. Nassano, 76, of Fort Thomas, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a nurse with St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas, and Dr. Glenn Phister.

Survivors include sisters, Jane Ellis of Cincinnati and Camille Nassano of Fort Thomas; and a brother, Gerald Nassano of St. Clair, Wyo.

Alonzo Pete Parson, 81, of Independence, died Saturday at his home.

He was a re tired employee of Hoffer Construction Co. and an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include daughters, Sandra Parson, Peggy Parson, Patty Parson and Lori Parson, all of Covington; sons, Billy Parson of Indianapolis, Donnie Parson of Covington, Darrell Parson, Allan Parson, Peter Parson, Danny Parson and Jimmy Parson, all of Independence; sisters, Barbara Sebers of Huntsville, Tenn., Evelyn Overton of Maxine Welch, both of Oneida, Tenn., and Ola Baker of Crittenden; a brother, Earl Parson of Oneida; 36 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were this morning at Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to the family, in care of Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, P. O. Box 55, Walton, Ky. 41094.

Susan Maria Urz, 58, of Newport, died at 9:05 a.m. Wednesday at her home.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. Vincent DePaul Church, Newport.

Survivors include her husband, John F. Urz; sons, John P. Urz of Newport, Steve D. Urz of Wilder and Mark W. Urz of Dayton; a sister, Joan A. Wells of Fort Thomas; a brother, Jack Callahan of Clarksville, Tenn.; nine grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.
