Rodna Kostoski, Lazarus seamstress
Rodna Kostoski, who came to the U.S. from Macedonia when she was 23 years old and worked 28 years as a seamstress at Lazarus department stores, died Sunday. She was 55.
"She was an excellent seamstress," said Mrs. Kostoski's daughter, Vase Kostoski of Erlanger, Ky. "Back in Europe, she had made clothes for her family."
In the U.S., Mrs. Kostoski quickly found work at Lazarus in the men's clothing alterations department.
"She loved it there," said her daughter. "Lazarus employed a lot of former Europeans to do that kind of work. When my mother started, there were 40 people there doing alterations.
"When she retired, there were only two."
In Erlanger, Mrs. Kostoski no longer made clothes for her family because she discovered it was cheaper to buy them than to make them, said her daughter.
However, Mrs. Kostoski did a lot of knitting and crocheting. "She was very fast," said Vase Kostoski. "She could make a whole blanket in just a few days."
Mrs. Kostoski especially enjoyed living in America, said her daughter.
"It was kind of rough in Macedonia," she said. "She did farm work there and it was very hard work."
Mrs. Kostoski followed her older brother to America. Later, other relatives also came.
