Adriana Pastoor, resisted Nazis

Leading a life that sounds as if it came from a best-seller probably wasn't what Adriana Pastoor had in mind growing up in The Netherlands.

Ms. Pastoor, who lived in Cincinnati for 35 years, died Aug. 17 in Wildomar, Calif. She was 89.

A native of Utrecht in Holland, she graduated from college and planned a life as a home economics teacher and wife.

But when the Nazis occupied her homeland, she and husband Pieter Pastoor risked their lives by harboring two Jewish teens.

Following World War II, with the Cold War looming, she and her family immigrated to Toronto and then to Cincinnati. Her husband died just months after arriving in the Queen City and Ms. Pastoor relied on her faith to raise her four sons alone.

She jumped into community life, taking part in the Madeira Gardening Club, going to Parkview Heights Christian Reformed Church and its successor, Crosspoint Community Church, and volunteering with the Cincinnati Institute for the Blind.

At age 85 and almost totally blind, Ms. Pastoor became a citizen of the United States.

She is survived by sons Dirk of Cincinnati, Pieter II of Davis, Calif., George of Silver Spring, Md., and Arthur of Murrieta, Calif.

Visitation is 9 a.m. Monday at Elden A. Good Funeral Home, 2620 Erie Ave., Hyde Park, followed by a 10 a.m. memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Crosspoint Community Church, 945 Congress Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45246; the United Church of the Valley, 37224 Huckaby Lane, Murrieta, Calif. 92562 or Hospice of the Valleys, P.O. Box 686, Sun City, Calif. 92586.

Jewel Patterson Andriacco, waitress

Jewel Patterson Andriacco's kind heart carried her far in life.

The longtime, popular waitress at several West Side restaurants in the 1960s and 1970s served as much compassion to her customers as hot coffee.

The Green Township resident died Thursday at Mercy Franciscan Western Hills. She was 70.

"Mom was a passionate and compassionate person," said her son, Dan Andriacco, a former Post business editor who now is the spokesman for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. "She always spoke her mind, and always acted out of a generous heart. Her strong will and sense of humor carried her through many difficult illnesses over several years."

She was born in Summerset, Ky., and was raised in South Fairmount. She married her childhood sweetheart, also named Dan, at age 18 and the couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in March.

She worked as a waitress at West Side restaurants such as the former Rusty Canon and the former Gay 90s, where she waited on Pete Rose and Johnny Bench.

Cal Collins, 68, a jazz guitar virtuoso

Someone once said Cal Collins could play anything with a wire on it.

Friends, musicians and fans today are remembering Mr. Collins as not only Cincinnati's greatest jazz player, but one of the great guitarists of the jazz world.

Mr. Collins died at his home Sunday in Dillsboro, Ind., at the age of 68 of liver failure.

"He was one of the world's great jazz guitar players. ... He could take you to the top of the mountain with his talent," said vocalist Mary Ellen Tanner, who first met Mr. Collins in 1970 when he was part of Jerry Conrad's band on the Nick Clooney TV variety show.

Mr. Collins' brilliant career took him from playing Western swing in Indiana roadhouses to being a featured guitarist with Benny Goodman's band in the late '70s. He released internationally acclaimed records on the Concord label in the '80s and recorded with many of the label's stars, including Rosemary Clooney. Mr. Collins was a fixture and true treasure on the Cincinnati-area scene; his breezy, innovative style was almost taken for granted locally.

He played everywhere around town, from the Playboy Club in the '60s to years in drummer Dee Felice's band to steady gigging at shows at the Blue Wisp jazz club.

"He was the most natural musician I ever played with. Just the most natural swing player ever," said bassist Ron McCurdy, who worked with Mr. Collins in the mid-'60s at the Playboy Club. "That was the best band I ever played in. It was a memorable time."

"He was just born to play that ax, man," said drummer John Von Ohlen, leader of the Blue Wisp Big Band, who played with Mr. Collins for more than 30 years. "With Cal it was natural. He'd come up with something he'd never done in his life right on the spot and do it better than it's ever been done and never do it again."

Mr. Collins first picked up the guitar playing country and Western swing music, but soon gravitated toward jazz guitar. His national break came when Goodman took him under his wing.

"Goodman heard him once and took in Cal, just like he took in Lionel Hampton. He said, 'This is my man,' " Von Ohlen remembered.

Mr. Collins would use the Goodman exposure to land a Concord Record deal that drew international praise for his playing. Jazz guitar publications now rank Mr. Collins among the all-time greats. with such guitarists as Carl Kress and George Van Eps.

Mr. Collins was honored locally in 1979 with a Post-Corbett Award.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Ullrich-Filter Funeral Home in Dillsboro. Surviving in addition to his wife are seven children, 18 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Collins is survived by his wife Susie, and seven children, Debbie Ford, Carl Bruce Collins, Steve Collins, Marshawn McClain, Christine Kramer, Laura Ferguson, Scott Schwan, and 18 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Mary Newton, waitress, saved many in fire

Mary Newton, a Beverly Hills Supper Club waitress - who, in 1977, braved the smoke, fire and confusion to lead many people out of the Southgate nightclub to safety - died Sunday.

Ms. Newton, of Fort Wright, Ky., was 77.

"Something happened to her that night that she could never explain," said her son, Darrell Newton, of Florence. "She stayed calm while everyone else was panicking. It's something that no one can explain."

The fire claimed 165 lives.

It changed his mother's life, Newton said: "She said she realized how so many things just aren't all that important. Her family, especially children, became her focus."

After the fire, she became a waitress at the Town and Country Restaurant in Park Hills. In retirement, she led efforts to make more dialysis machines available to Northern Kentucky residents, her son said.

She also was an avid bird watcher and nature lover, he said.

He said his mother was "quite a character. ... Her last words were, 'Well, this is my last hurrah. I've had a good ride, and I'm out of here.' "

Mrs. Newton was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert. In addition to her son, she is survived by her daughter, Donna Tucker of Jacksonville, Fla.; sisters, Florence Thornhill of New Port Richey, Fla., and Nellie McQuery of Bethel; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
