Jane White, Navy Wave in World War II
As a Navy Wave in World War II, Jane Eaton White served as a gunnery instructor for sailors at Norfolk, Va.
"Women couldn't be combatants at that time, so they would perform shore duties that freed up men to go to sea," said her son, Clinton "Skip" White of Lincoln University, Pa.
Although WAVES stood for "Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service," not everyone welcomed women in uniform, he said. "Some of the men would give them a hard time," he said.
But not Clinton White, an enlisted sailor just back from the South Pacific, who fell for the Wave from Kentucky. The two were married 45 years until his death in 1991.
Mrs. White, of Fort Mitchell, Ky., died Monday. She was 85.
Mrs. White continued her volunteer service after the war, giving 50 years of service to the Girl Scouts of America. She was a troop leader when her daughter, Frances Otten of Taylor, Mich., was a scout, but spent most of her time teaching girls at scout camps about trees, shrubs and flowers.

Charles Stoll, riverboat pilot, oil firm owner
Charles William Stoll, who helped preserve two Ohio River steamboats, died Monday in Louisville, Ky. He was 85.
Mr. Stoll was a salesman and later owner of the family business, Stoll Oil Company, which became Sinclair and later Atlantic Richfield. But his heart was on the river.
"Once you're infected with that strange indefinable malady, river fever, you're never quite normal again. You've got it, and there's nothing can be done about it," he once said.
Mr. Stoll helped preserve the Delta Queen and the Avalon, which later become the Belle of Louisville.
Mr. Stoll learned to steer on the Avalon excursion boat in the 1930s.
He was a member of the crew that brought the Delta Queen up the Ohio River to Pittsburgh to be rebuilt in 1947.
The next year, he helped bring the boat to its new home in Cincinnati.
He would go on to oversee the restoration that turned the Avalon into the Belle of Louisville, as chairman of the boat's operating board.
After he became ill a few years ago he spent time watching the river from an upstairs window at his home. The Belle of Louisville would always blow the whistle for him as it passed.
Services are today in Louisville.
Arrangements by Pearson's Funeral Home, 149 Breckenridge Lane, Louisville.
Memorials may be made to Bellewood Presbyterian Children's Home or Second Presbyterian Church, 3701 Old Brownsboro Road, Louisville.
