Mrs. Scholten, 103, nurse's aid in WWII
Grace Margaret Spies Scholten was the lucky twin.
Eight months after their birth in 1898, Grace and her twin sister, Florence Caroline, were stricken with cholera morbus.
Florence died, but Grace went on to live to be 103 years old.
Mrs. Scholten, who was featured in a 1998 Cincinnati Post article about centenarians, said she had lived so long because, "I never lived in a home where anyone smoked" and "I was never spanked or yelled at."
By donating her body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, she has given humanity a chance to learn even more about her longevity.
Mrs. Scholten, a North Avondale resident, died Wednesday after a brief illness.
She would have been 104 on Jan. 15, 2002.
She was born in Merrill, Iowa, and spent her childhood in Minnehaha County, S.D. She worked as a nurse's aid during World War II, took the census in 1940, 1950 and 1960, and volunteered for the Red Cross in North Carolina for 25 years.
After moving to Cincinnati she was a member of the Quaker Meeting, a volunteer with the community Land Cooperative and an avid bridge player at the Hyde Park Center for Older Adults.
Her son, Richard Scholten of North Avondale, said Mrs. Scholten took a keen interest in civic affairs, including faithful voting once women earned the right to vote.
"She voted in every presidential election that a woman could vote in," he said.
Her husband, Alfred Clinton Scholten, and eight siblings preceded her in death.
She is survived by three sons, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial gathering will be held Jan. 20, 2002 at the Quaker Meeting House in North Avondale.
