Sherry Furnish, founded PJ's deli
Sherry Merkle Furnish founded the popular downtown Cincinnati deli PJ's and served lunch crowds there for nearly two decades.
Mrs. Furnish died Friday at her home in Rising Sun, Ind., after a battle with cancer. She was 55.
"Good, friendly service was her main goal," said a son, Greg Merkle of Bridgetown.
"All of our customers - they loved her. We'd have people come in just to see her."
Mrs. Furnish co-founded the PJ's Deli at 29 E. Court St., downtown, 19 years ago.
A second PJ's was opened by her sons at 927 Main St., downtown, about six years ago.
PJ's stands for "Praise Jesus," Merkle said.
"Everything that went on here, she was a part of," he said. "She was very pleasant to deal with."
Two years ago, Mrs. Furnish bought the Sunny Hollow Banquet Hall in Cheviot.
In August, she sold it to her other surviving son, Gary Merkle of Harrison.
Other survivors include her husband, Ken Furnish of Rising Sun, Ind.; two sisters, Barbara Owens of Western Hills and Mary Creech of Covington, and five grandchildren.

Sister Ann Joseph Link, 90, educator
As a Sister of Charity for 73 years, Ann Joseph Link served as a teacher, principal and an "adopted mom" to generations of children throughout the Cincinnati region.
"It's a thrill to watch young minds develop," she said in a 1974 newspaper interview. "I've always enjoyed teaching."
Sister Ann Joseph died Friday at the age of 90.
A native of Flint, Mich., but raised in Lima, she spent 51 years in education. Sister Ann Joseph taught for 11 years at Holy Cross School in Mount Adams (1928-1939), 13 years at St. Elizabeth in Norwood (1939-1952) and two years at St. Raphael in Springfield (1953-1955).
She then served as principal at St. Boniface in Northside (1955-1961) and Holy Family in Price Hill (1961-1964). She moved to St. Rita School for the Deaf in Evendale, serving as house superior, seventh- and eighth-grade teacher, and principal of the elementary division (1964-1974).
After that, she returned to her hometown of Lima and taught at her alma mater, St. Rose grade and high school. When she left St. Rose in 1982 to move to the Sisters of Charity Motherhouse in Delhi, the mayor of Lima proclaimed April 22, 1982, "Sister Ann Joseph Day."
During a one-year stint as house parent at St. Joseph Orphanage in the 1950s, Sister Ann Joseph became an "adopted mom" to Joan Axt and her brothers, who were growing up there. They remained close, and Ms. Axt was with Sister Ann Joseph the day before she died.
"Sister Ann Joseph had such faith in you," Ms. Axt said. "You wanted to make her proud of you. She helped you build confidence in yourself, and when she said she loved you, you knew she meant it."
Sister Ann Joseph leaves two brothers, Joseph and Jack; five sisters, Rose Seton Link, S.C., Teresa Brown, Ruth Murray, Virginia Niawold, and Helen Hittle; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Heritage Room at the Sisters of Charity Motherhouse in Delhi. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 3 p.m. in the Immaculate Conception Chapel at Motherhouse, followed by burial in the Motherhouse cemetery.
Memorials can be made in Sister Ann Joseph Link's name to the Sisters of Charity Retirement Fund, 5900 Delhi Rd., Mount St. Joseph, Ohio 45051.
