Emil Nelson, Summit teacher, coach
Emil Nelson, a teacher and soccer coach at Summit Country Day School, died Tuesday at Good Samaritan Hospital after a two-month battle with leukemia. He was 30.
Born in Kampala, Uganda, Mr. Nelson grew up in Yellow Springs and graduated from Wilmington College with a degree in education.
He taught social studies at Summit's middle school for the past seven years and coached seventh- and eighth-grade boys soccer. He also helped in Summit's after-school and summer programs.
He was an accomplished guitarist, avid soccer player in outdoor leagues and weekly reader with the Association of the Blind. Mr. Nelson also enjoyed weight-lifting, running, skiing and roller-blading.
Survivors include his wife of 10 years, Cammie Corder-Nelson; three children, Sierra Grace, 9, Rowan Emil, 7, and Tiernan Rebecca, 3; his mother, Jean Lopez, of Yellow Springs; his father, Paul Nelson, of Alta Dena, Calif.; and two sisters, Naznin Nelson of Minneapolis, Minn., and Corlina Corder.

Michael Janis, honored WWII pilot
Michael L. Janis, teacher, decorated World War II pilot and member of the famed Flying Tigers Squadron, died Monday of a heart attack while on vacation in Naples, Fla. The West Chester resident was 78. A native of Gary, Ind., Janis joined the U.S. Army in 1942, trained as a fighter pilot and spent the war years in the China-Burma theater.
After the war, Janis received his degree in education at High Point College in North Carolina, and from 1958 until 1966 taught Spanish at Fairfield High School.
In 1966 he changed careers and became a computer programmer with National Cash Register in Dayton. He worked as a computer systems analyst for Cincinnati Milacron from 1972 until he retired in 1982.
Survivors include his wife, Millie; four sisters, Anne Kincaid of Plantation, Fla., Jean Worrick, of Lakewood, Calif., Sally Davis of Brea, Calif., and Helen McCartney, of Denver.

Walter Beckjord, served on council
Walter Edson Beckjord enjoyed serving his community and worked tirelessly for causes such as education.
The Hyde Park resident died Friday. He was 78.
"He was trying to repay society and help other people," said his wife, Mary Jane Beckjord. "He felt as if he was getting something out of life that way."
After earning his law degree from Yale Law School in 1949, Mr. Beckjord became a member of th e Ohio State Board of Education. He also served on Cincinnati City Council from 1975 to 1981. While on counci l, he pushed for the establishment of a curfew for juveniles and initiated a program to control rats. After l eaving council, he lost a bid to become a nominee for the U.S. Senate.
He served as vice president and general counsel for Cincinnati Gas & Electric Co. from 1951 t o 1972. His father, Walter C. Beckjord, was CG&E president and a New Richmond power plant is named for him.< p> At the time of Walter E. Beckjord's death, he worked as an arbitrator for the State Employm ent Relations Board as well as the American Arbitration Association. He also helped to establish the Coldstrea m Country Club in Anderson Township. Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane; sons Reed, James and Alex Beck jord and the late John Beckjord of Cincinnati; a brother, Eric Beckjord of Washington, D.C.; a sister, Barbar a Batten of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and two grandsons.
