Miriam Kockritz, devoted to music
Miriam Otto Kockritz shared a profound musical partnership with her husband, the late Hubert Kockritz. He taught voice at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, and she provided piano accompaniment for all his lessons.
"She was as devoted to music as he was," said their daughter, Andrea Wiot of Cincinnati. "It was wonderful for me to grow up in a house of classical music."

Mrs. Kockritz died Sunday at Mercy St. Theresa Center in Mariemont. She was 95.

John Iden, piano accompanist with the Cincinnati Ballet, described Mrs. Kockritz as "a wonderful lady, a great artist and a terrific accompanist. She had tremendous insight into what it took to accompany a singer. She was a perfectionist, yes, but she was very kind. She would make a student do a selection over, but she understood she was dealing with people who had feelings."

Mrs. Kockritz began teaching at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music in 1938 along with her husband. She was the niece of Bertha Bauer, who directed the Conservatory from 1912 until 1930.

She played with the Heermann Trio, served as opera coach for the Cincinnati Summer Opera and played the piano for staging rehearsals for many years at the Cincinnati Zoo and later at Music Hall.

She also played the organ, celesta and backstage piano for opera performances as well as for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.

Other survivors include sisters, Caroline Sanger of Seattle and Pauline Swing of Sarasota, Fla.; a son, Chris Kockritz, of Venice, Fla.; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Because Mrs. Kockritz donated her body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Memorials are suggested to the Hubert and Miriam Kockritz Fund for the Performing Arts at the Greater Cincinnati Foundation, 200 W. Fourth St., Cincinnati 45237, or the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati Foundation, P.O. Box 19970, Cincinnati, 45219.
