Owen "Pete" Headley, a jockey who rode at thoroughbred tracks throughout the country during a 35-year career, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. He was 67.

During those years — from 1953 to 1987 — he won more than 400 races, said his wife, Georgia, and was a former meet leader at River Downs

After he retired from race riding, he spent a decade as a jockey's agent, then after he retired again in 1997 he exercised horses at local tracks.

Frederick Doepke, was 'Model Toys' co-founder

The name is familiar to many who never even met the man: Frederick W. "Fritz" Doepke, a Hyde Park native and businessman whose family name is associated with a model toy company, a New York brokerage and a Central Parkway landmark, died last month in Connecticut.

He was 86.

"They don't come any better," said his wife of 56 years, Margaret Lillard Doepke of Greenwich, Conn. "He was a wonderful man full of personality. He just loved life."

Mr. Doepke and his late brother co-founded the Charles William Doepke Manufacturing Co. in Rossmoyne, which produced faithful steel miniatures of construction and firefighting trucks, locomotives and foreign sports cars marketed under the brand name "Model Toys."

The miniatures, which now fetch hundreds or even thousands of dollars from collectors, were featured in Saturday Evening Post and Fortune magazine articles in the 1950s, touted as "toys of peace" — an alternative to the Army tanks and cowboy six-shooters that dominated toy store shelves. Mr. Doepke later served as president of the Toy Manufacturers Association and served nine years on its board.

The company was sold in 1959 and the following year Mr. Doepke moved to New York and Connecticut, where he would later co-found brokerage and financial consultants Webber & Doepke Inc. and W&D Equities Corp., serving as chairman of both firms.

The Samuel Hannaford-designed Alms & Doepke Building at 222 East Central Parkway, which now houses Child Care Services for the Hamilton County Department of Job and Family Services, was originally a department store founded by Mr. Doepke's grandfather, William F. Doepke, and the Alms brothers.

After graduating from Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, in 1938, Mr. Doepke worked in a Chicago department store, Carson, Pirie and Scott, then joined the Army Air Corps in World War II as a pilot.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Frederick W. Doepke II of Gig Harbor, Wash.; three daughters, Margaret Scott Van Hook of Nashville, Tenn., Diane Voigt of Darien, Conn., and Page Flournoy of Fairfield, Conn.; and five grandchildren. A nephew, Eric Doepke, is a noted landscape architect with an office in Hyde Park.

A memorial service was held last month in Old Greenwich. Memorials may be made to Greenwich Hospital Home Care or Cardiac Rehab, 5 Perryridge Road, Greenwich, Conn. 06830, or the charity of donor's choice.
