Rev. Albert E. Lauer, 55, founded school
Widely known evangelistic priest Albert E. Lauer, founder of the St. Peter Claver Latin School for Boys in Over-the-Rhine, died Sunday after a long battle with cancer.

Rev. Lauer, 55, founded the school as pastor of Old St. Mary parish in Over-the-Rhine, a position he accepted in 1998. The all-boys school bucked the trend of opening new Catholic schools only in the suburbs.

Others knew Rev. Lauer through Presentation Ministries, the lay association of small faith communities and ministries that he founded. The group has hosted a popular summer Bible Institute at Xavier University for more than 15 years.

Rev. Lauer also founded the Fathers of Pentecost, a religious association dedicated to evangelization and outreach to minorities.

And he made regular radio and television broadcasts called "Daily Bread" and wrote a daily meditation book called "One Bread, One Body."

Ordained to the priesthood in May 1974 by then-Archbishop Joseph Bernardin, Rev. Lauer started his career as an associate pastor at St. Luke in Beavercreek and teacher at Alter High School in Dayton. He moved on to St. Joseph in Springfield, then St. Leo in North Fairmount and St. Lawrence in Price Hill.

He is survived by his mother, Antoinette Lauer; a sister, Christina Endres; and a brother, Edward Lauer.

Reception of the body will begin at 1 p.m. Friday at Old St. Mary Church, followed by a prayer service at 5 p.m. The funeral Mass will be at 7 p.m. at St. Peter in Chains Cathedral, with Archbishop Daniel Pilarczyk officiating. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Cemetery in Hamilton.

Memorials may be directed to the Old St. Mary's Church, St. Peter Claver Latin School for Boys, Presentation Ministries or the Brothers and Fathers of Pentecost. Send donations to 123 E. 13th St., Cincinnati, Ohio, 45202.
