Giles Conrad, co-founder of Waco Oil, bank owner
Giles Conrad, 71, of Hebron, who parlayed a Covington gas station into the Waco Oil Co., died Saturday of lung cancer at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence.

A new Boone County park was recently dedicated and named in Mr. Giles' honor after he donated 43 acres to create the only Ohio Riverfront park in Boone County.

Mr. Conrad and his brother, Don, opened a gas station at Tenth and Scott streets in Covington in the mid 1950s. They kept building their business and accumulated more than 30 gas stations in Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana.

The brothers turned their operation into Waco Oil Co. in the 1980s and almost all Shell stations in the area were owned by Waco. The company has since been sold to Shell.

The Conrad brothers also bought Covington Trust Bank, which later became a Huntington bank.

Mr. Conrad, a Navy veteran of the Korean War, was a member of American Legion Post No. 203 in Latonia, a board member of Huntington Bank and belonged to Hebron Lutheran Church. He also was very active in the Special Olympics of Northern Kentucky.

Other survivors include his wife, Selma McGlasson Conrad, four sons, David G. Conrad of Cincinnati, Mark E. Conrad of Edgewood, Jay D. Conrad of Union, and William C. Conrad of Villa Hills; a daughter, Susan Dreihs of Frankfort, Ind.; a brother, Don Conrad of Union; and seven grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hebron Lutheran Church.Visitation:4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home in Hebron and 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Mildred Bendel, 83, nurse for five decades
Mildred M. Bendel, 83, of Lakeside Park, who worked 50 years as a registered nurse, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.

Mrs. Bendel began her nursing career in 1940 and retired in 1990. She worked 13 years at Boothe Hospital and 37 years at Holmes Hospital. She was a nursing supervisor her last few years at Holmes.

Mrs. Bendel also was a life-long volunteer at Shriner's Burn Institute in Cincinnati.

"She just loved helping people," said Mrs. Bendel's husband of 60 years, Harold E. Bendel. "Everybody liked her, and she liked everybody."

Other survivors include a son, David E. Bendel of Lakeside Park, and three grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the Stith Funeral Home in Florence.

Funeral services will be there at 1 p.m. Friday.

Memorials may be made to Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children, 3229 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio, 45229, or the Stray Animal Adoption Program, P.O. Box 72040, Newport, Ky., 41072.

Maurice 'Mike' Murphy, retired to Ireland
Maurice J. "Mike" Murphy loved Ireland and all things Irish so much that when he retired he moved to the Emerald Isle.

Mr. Murphy had located his great-grandparents' homestead in County Kerry, Island, while researching his ancestry, bought the place and retired there in 1980. He died in Cahersiveen, Ireland, Sunday at the age of 76.

"He never met a stranger," said a daughter, Ann Schuette of Edgewood, Ky. "Everyone who met him really liked him."

Mr. Murphy helped found the Cincinnati St. Patrick's Day parade in the 1960s, along with other members of the Ancient Order of Hibernians.

It was the same bunch that, about 25 years ago, started the tradition of "stealing" the statue of St. Patrick from Holy Cross-Immaculata Church in Mount Adams, said Mr. Murphy's daughter.

In Ireland, he married Mary Casey Murphy, and had four children, the last one when he was 66 years old, Schuette said. He had five children from a previous marriage in the United States.

They lived on the side of a mountain overlooking the Skellig Islands in St. Finian's Bay, where monks once made their home.

Mr. Murphy was former owner of the M&M Insurance Co.

Survivors in addition to his wife and daughter include sons, Joseph Murphy and Michael Murphy, both of Cincinnati, and Maurice Murphy and Jonathan Murphy, both of Ireland; daughters, Mary Murphy of Allegheny, Ore., Patricia Franklin of Symmes Township, and Bridget Murphy and Eilis Murphy, of Ireland,; a sister, Eileen Flanigan of Dearborn, Mich.; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A memorial Mass will be said at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Teresa of Avila Church, Cincinnati.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2A, Florence, Ky. 41042; or Mary Murphy Spud Mor, Duchalla, the Glen Ballinskelligs, County Kerry, Ireland.
