Helen Melter, 86, spent life helping others
Helen Melter lived her life looking for ways to help others.

"With my mom, whatever needed to be done, she was there to say, `Let me help," said her daughter, Diana K. Bragg of Indianapolis.

Mrs. Melter, of Pleasant Ridge, who died Monday at 86, found many of her opportunities at Valley Interfaith Food and Clothing Center. She began volunteering there after the death of her husband, Robert H. Melter, in 1981 and continued until last year, when health problems forced her to quit.

When she started, the organization was housed at Friendship United Methodist Church in Wyoming; it has since moved into its own quarters in Lockland

"She brought mending home, she sorted clothes and food. She would go over there on Sunday afternoon to make up food orders so they would be ready for the clients when they came on Monday," Bragg said. "She was a giver and a helper, someone who others knew they could depend on."

Mrs. Melter got involved with Valley Interfaith through her church, St. John Church of Christ in Reading. At the church she was also a constant volunteer, most recently helping in the office with communications.

"She could work rings around you and me," Bragg said. "She was a typical German, she put her head down and did what needed to be done."

Survivors include a son, Rev. James Melter, of Kettlersville, Ohio; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Chief Stanley Schrotel, 88, served city

Stanley R. Schrotel, a former Cincinnati police chief, died Tuesday at the Hospice of Cincinnati in Blue Ash. Formerly of Mount Lookout, he was 88.
After retiring as police chief, Chief Schrotel served as national director of security for Kroger and then was administrator of the Hamilton County Domestic Relations Court.

A graduate of Withrow High School, he worked as a police officer while attending the University of Cincinnati and, later, the Salmon P. Chase College of Law at Northern Kentucky University. There he won a law degree and found his wife.

Betty Schrotel met her eventual husband while she was working in the city prosecutor's office. A future magistrate, she, too, was taking night courses at Chase.

Chief Schrotel joined the force in 1934. He was a Sedamsville patrolman during the 1937 flood, working 12-hour shifts to rescue trapped families by boat and move them to dry land. After a power outage made it impossible to pump and purify water, the young patrolman tapped a natural spring on Delhi Avenue, filling milk cans with fresh water. It was the only supply of drinking water for many Price Hill families until more could be trucked in.

He was named police chief in 1951 at age 37, the youngest in the city's history.

Chief Schrotel was frequently called on to review other police departments' operations, and he was a candidate to lead the Chicago, Denver and Baltimore police departments, and even the FBI.

"He also was interviewed to be the police chief of the U.S. Virgin Islands. But he turned that one down, too," Mrs. Schrotel said. "He really wanted to stay in Cincinnati. He loved this city."

Chief Schrotel was a member of the Rotary Club, Scottish Rite, the Shrine, the Order of Curia, the Ohio and Cincinnati Bar associations, the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police, the National Academy Association, Knox Presbyterian Church in Hyde Park and Santa Rosa Community Church in Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Kim Schrotel of Milford; two sons, John "Bucky" Schrotel of Tampa, Fla., and James Schrotel of Santa Maria, Calif.; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at noon Monday at the Jon Deitloff Funeral Centre, 4389 Spring Grove Ave., Winton Place. Memorials: Hospice of Cincinnati, 4310 Cooper Road, Cincinnati 45242 or Shriners Hospitals-Cincinnati, 3229 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati 45229.
