Harold Bryant, Xavier professor, farmer

Harold L. "Hal" Bryant, former chairman of the Xavier University Department of Economics, died Tuesday of brain cancer. He was 67.
Dr. Bryant died at the Primrose Place Health Center in Springfield, Mo. He moved to Missouri in 1998, where he farmed in Niangua and raised purebred Tarentaise cattle. He developed his love of farming in Kentucky, where he and his wife, Ann, had a cattle farm in California from 1989 until they moved to Missouri.

"We were city slickers. We had a lot to learn," Ann Bryant said. "He fell in love with farming."

He graduated from Hughes High in 1954 and spent four years in the U.S. Air Force before he returned to begin studies at the University of Cincinnati, from which he earned a bachelor's degree in geology, master's in economics and community planning and a Ph.D. in economics. He supported his family working as a meat cutter and teaching as a graduate assistant.

"He was a constant teacher and mentor with everyone he came in contact with," his wife said.

Dr. Bryant reveled in tackling new projects.

From the mid 1970s to the late 1980s he was co-owner of the Window Garden restaurants in Hyde Park and Western Hills. "He was teaching full time, but he wanted to have a business, too," his wife said.

He also worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and was a forensic economist, opening his own consulting business in Fort Thomas, Ky., in the 1980s.

He was diagnosed with multiple brain tumors last December. Surviving in addition to his wife are daughters Tina Vargas of Cincinnati and Donna Bryant of Springfield, Mo.; stepdaughter Michele Bunzel of Wilder, Ky.; stepson Michael Bunzel of Southgate, Ky.; his father, Lester Bryant of Cincinnati; brother James Robert Bryant of Cincinnati; and sister Kaye Hickman of Cincinnati.

Funeral services were Friday, but a memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Nov. 26 in Xavier's Bellarmine Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Dr. Harold L. Bryant Endowed Scholarship Fund, Xavier University, 3800 Victory Parkway, Cincinnati, Ohio 45207.

King Harrison, jazz, antique car enthusiast
King Carson Harrison, a Cincinnati insurance executive known for his sense of humor, his collection of jazz recordings and his love of antique cars has died.

He was 67.

The Indian Hill resident died Saturday after a short illness.

He was retired from Schiff Kreidler-Shell insurance and served in the Air Force, where he reached the rank of captain.

His jazz record collection was known as one of the best in the nation, and he founded Nashy, a group of jazz fans who brought performers including Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Buddy Rich to Cincinnati.

His enthusiasm for cars spawned an annual charity fund-raising event when he and a friend, Dan Rebhun, started an antique car rally that later became the annual Concourse D'Elegance.

And Mr. Harrison turned his lifelong love of fireworks into annual Fourth of July fireworks displays at the Camargo Club and shows at the Miami Boat Club.

His wife, Jane, preceded him in death. Survivors include his daughters, Ann and Jane; a son, King Jr.; and six grandchildren.

Services are set for 4 p.m. today at St. Thomas Church, Terrace Park.

Richard Gordon, former reporter, editor, and columnist with The Post
Like many reporters, Richard Gordon often found himself working for editors who got grumpy if he did not get every story first, every time.

In the days when Cincinnati was a three-daily newspaper town, Gordon, then business editor of The Post, frequently had to fend off the complaints from his managing editor over why the Times-Star always seemed to break the big business stories.

"How come we can't get the break on some of these stories?" the managing editor fumed. "What can we do?"

"Change your name to Taft," Gordon suggested.

His boss, Gordon noted succinctly, "did not appreciate that."

During his nearly quarter-century with The Post, however, his bosses, much more often than not, did appreciate the humor and stories produced by Gordon, who died Sunday at 85.

In between two stints with The Post that stretched from the 1940s into the 1980s, the Illinois native also was editor of Cincinnati Magazine, public relations director of Northlich Stolley Inc., and public relations director of the Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce.

After starting as a reporter at The Post in 1946, Gordon moved through other positions that included — in addition to business editor — assistant city editor, columnist and ombudsman.

When he left The Post in 1956, he went into public relations, "which most newsmen think pays fabulously." But whatever the financial benefits, Gordon eventually found that a public relations office was a poor substitute for a newsroom in terms of psychic rewards.

"When you leave a paper that has become such a large part of your life, it tears you up," Gordon said.

So Gordon returned to The Post in 1973 — by which time The Post had acquired the Taft family-owned Times-Star — and the paper remained part of his life until he retired in 1986.

Gordon — whose wife, Helen, is deceased — is survived by three children, Jan Gordon, Carol Howe and Gary Gordon.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Thomas-Justin Memorial Funeral Home, 7500 Montgomery Road, Kenwood. Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Pleasant Ridge Presbyterian Church.
