Jack Fightmaster, WWII veteran, retired chemist
Jack D. Fightmaster, retired chief chemist for the Gulf Oil Corp. in Hooven, Ohio, died Wednesday at his home in Dry Ridge, Ky.

He was 77.

Mr. Fightmaster had a quiet, reassuring manner that others liked to be around, said his son, Michael Fightmaster of Cincinnati. "He was so humble, and yet so strong. To me, he was best when somebody needed something."

Mr. Fightmaster received the Distinguished Flying Cross for action he took in a bomber high above the Pacific during World War II. A bomb, set to explode on a time delay, became stuck in the bomb bay, and he climbed into the bay and dislodged it, said his wife, Helen.

After the war, Mr. Fightmaster studied at the University of Kentucky. After graduating, he worked as a chemist, retiring in 1981.

He and his wife lived on a farm in Dry Ridge in recent years, where he raised horses and cattle.

Other survivors include a son, John E. Fightmaster of Dry Ridge; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Two sons, Steven Barry Fightmaster and Jamie Donaldson Fightmaster, preceded him in death.

Robert Temple Keeler, prominent attorney

Former Cincinnati resident Robert Temple Keeler, an attorney who once served on the board of directors of Time Inc., died at 12:10 p.m. Thursday at his country home in Dorset, Vt.

Mr. Keeler was born in Cleveland 88 years ago, on the first day of World War I. With his typical wry wit, he sometimes described his birth as "the second calamity of the day."

He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Dartmouth College in 1936 and earned a law degree from Yale University in 1939.

While at Dartmouth, he earned a six-month internship with the Franklin D. Roosevelt administration, which he later said turned him off politics and made him a Republican, said his nephew, Jim Brodhead.

After graduating from Yale, Mr. Keeler joined the firm of Taft, Stettinius and Hollister, founded by former U.S. Sen. Robert Alphonso Taft, R- Ohio, and moved to Cincinnati.

In 1942, he temporarily left the firm to enlist as an ensign in the Navy, where his first big assignment was defending an enlisted man accused of insulting an officer. He left the Navy in 1946, with the rank of lieutenant junior grade, and returned to the firm.

Mr. Keeler also worked with his first cousin, Arthur Temple Jr., to build the timber business their grandfather founded into the half-million-acre East Texas Pulp & Paper Co., a principal supplier of Time Inc.

When the media conglomerate merged with the paper company in 1973, Keeler and his cousin joined the Time Inc. board of directors. They resigned 10 years later to protest Time's merger with Warner Brothers.

Mr. Keeler had married Florence Field "Fifi" Mithoefer of Cincinnati in 1940. After their divorce in 1975, he married Margaret "Peggy" Palmer Mithoefer, the widow of his first wife's elder brother.

Mr. Keeler retired from the Taft firm in 1982, after 43 years with the firm, 32 of them as a partner. He then concentrated on his interest in the arts. He was elected to the board of directors of the Cincinnati Art Museum in 1993.

With his second wife, he endowed a riverside park as part of the renovation of the city waterfront. They also endowed the Mary Drury history chair at the Seven Hills School, and the school's John Whitman Keeler Memorial Theatre in honor of Mr. Keeler's younger son, who died in 1993.

He is survived by his wife; his cousin Arthur; four children, all in California, David Keeler of Santa Ynez, Tanny Keeler-Hodgetts of Santa Barbara, Alison Keeler Carrillo of Santa Cruz and Melissa Keeler Burns Morris of Santa Barbara; four stepchildren, James Mithoefer of Ludlow, Vt., Peter Mithoefer of Chappaqua, N.Y., Margaret Mithoefer Seeley of Dorset, Vt., and Martha "Molly" Mithoefer of Lubec, Maine; a sister, Virginia Keeler Townley of Green Lake, Wis.; and seven grandchildren.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Seven Hills School or the Cincinnati Art Museum.Funeral arrangements are pending.
