Allen 'Lish' Lishawa, state tax commissioner
A former deputy state tax commissioner from Cincinnati has died.
Allen Lishawa, who managed the Ohio Department of Taxation office in Cincinnati for 41 years, died Sunday at Vista Care hospice center, Anderson Township. He was 91.
Called "Lish" by his friends, his life was characterized by giving and helping others, said his family.
He earned degrees from the University of Cincinnati College of Engineering and the Salmon P. Chase College of Law, then used his education to help others.
He supported UC's co-op program by giving several co-op students tax deparment jobs over the years. After retiring, Mr. Lishawa volunteered for 14 years with the Service Corps for Retired Executives, sharing his tax and legal expertise with small business owners.
He was active at Mount Washington Presbyterian Church and on the board of directors at Beech Acres for 25 years. He also was on the Air Pollution Board and a retired Army Reserve lieutenant colonel.
Mr. Lishawa was an artist and a musician. He drew cartoons and caricatures for annuals in high school and college and sang in glee clubs at both levels.
Married for 64 years to Thelma Hoinke Lishawa, who died in 2000, the couple traveled extensively, taking more than 35 Elder Hostel trips all over the world and many jaunts in their Volkswagen camper.
Mr. Lishawa is survived by daughters, Nancy Probaska and Bonnie Holler; a son, Barry Lishawa, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at noon today at Mount Washington Presbyterian Church. Services will begin at 1 p.m. at the church.

Junichi Kasahar, led sister cities
Junichi Kasahar, a Japanese legislator who was instrumental in creating the Cincinnati-Gifu Sister City Program, died Saturday afternoon in Gifu after suffering a heart attack. He was 70.
A Liberal Democratic Party member of Japan's legislature, the Diet, Sen. Kasahar worked in 1987 and 1988 to create the sister city relationship between Cincinnati and Gifu, which is on the Nagara River between Tokyo and Kyoto.
Kasahar later invited the Cincinnati Reds to Gifu, donated one of the oldest swords in Japan to the Cincinnati Art Museum and helped arrange the visit of Japanese government officials to Cincinnati. He also attended Gov. George Voinovich's inauguration.
Cincinnati Mayor Charlie Luken has sent his condolences to Sen. Kasahar's family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, a son and a daughter.
Funeral services were Tuesday afternoon in Gifu.

Curtis Norris, was 'Mr. Dependable'
Curtis Henry Norris, who earned a reputation as "Mr. Dependable" during a 43-year career in the life insurance industry, died Sunday at Victoria Retirement Community in Norwood.
He was the father of Cincinnati City Council Member Minette Cooper.
Mr. Norris, who spent many years in North Carolina, served as a member of the Examination Board of the Life Underwriters Training Council. After his retirement in 1980, he was designated "Mr. Dependable" by his colleagues.
He also served on the Education Committee of the NAACP and was a fund-raiser for the United Negro College Fund.
His first wife, Minnie Calloway, died in 1988. In 1996, he married Edna Hogue of Cincinnati, who survives.
In addition to Ms. Cooper, survivors include another daughter, Henri E. Norris of San Francisco; a son, Curtis H. Norris Jr. of Englewood, N.J.; stepson, Darwin Keith Turner of Atlanta; stepdaughter Pamela Turner Welch of Austin, Texas ; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at 6 p.m. today at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 1809 Rutland Ave., Evanston. A memorial service is 7 p.m. today at the church. Thompson, Hall and Jordan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lola Vordenberg, musician
Lola Donette Vordenberg, an educator and musician, died Tuesday at age 84.
Mrs. Vordenberg came to Cincinnati in the early 1940s to study at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, where she earned a bachelor's degree.
A pianist and organist, Ms. Vordenberg played professionally for a time and also taught Music at the Hillsdale school and gave private lessons.
She played for church services and numerous events in the area and accompanied a choral group at the Cincinnati Woman's Club, where she was a long-time member.
She also judged piano competitions at the College-Conservatory of Music of the University of Cincinnati.
Mrs. Vordenberg also loved theater.
She and her husband Wesley, a Xavier University professor, were subscribers to Playhouse in the Park.
When Professor Vordenberg realized that part-time students need financial help as much as full-time students, the couple established the Wes and Lola Vordenberg Scholarship Fund.
About 30 scholarships have been awarded through Xavier's Center for Adult and Part-time Students.
Her husband preceded her in death.
She is survived by her daughter, Frances Vordenberg Uecker and step-brother Frank Rizutto.
Services were this morning.
