Franklin Powers, 70, architect and renowned jazz musician

One of Cincinnati's most renowned jazz practitioners, Franklin "Frank" Powers, died Friday after a short illness. The Clifton resident was 70.
Mr. Powers, who played clarinet, "was a great player, but he also was a brilliant historian," said City Council Member Jim Tarbell, a former Over-the-Rhine jazz club owner.

"There are very few people in the country who had his wealth of knowledge - or his library - of traditional jazz and blues."

Born in Akron, Mr. Powers moved to Cincinnati to attend the University of Cincinnati's School of Architecture and never left.

A professional architect for many years, he designed several buildings in Greater Cincinnati, including schools in Kentucky, and later worked on Kings Island, now Paramount's Kings Island. He retired about 10 years ago to become a full-time musician.

"He didn't make much money making music. He made money making buildings. Music was his love, besides me," said Julia Hagan of Charleston, W.Va., his companion of 17 years.

Mr. Powers, who also played saxophone and piano, was an accomplished musician as far back as junior high school, Hagan said.

"He picked it up at a young age. He had a good ear, as they say," she said. "His mother was a schoolteacher, and she helped him pursue it. She believed children should have a well-rounded education and that included music."

In the 1950s, he played with the Gin Bottle Seven; in the 1970s and '80s, with the Arnold's All-Star Traditional Jazz Band. More recently, he played with the Sleepcat Band at Dee Felice, a Covington club and restaurant.

Mr. Powers was heard on "A Prairie Home Companion," a program distributed by Public Radio International, as well as on the Cincinnati jazz music compilations "Cincinnati Jazz Collection," volumes 2 and 3, obitby J Curve Records. He also wrote "The Losantiville Blues," which Charley Carey played on "The Story of Jazz," his Sunday afternoon radio program on 91.7 FM WVXU, after Mr. Powers was hospitalized two weeks ago, Hagan said.

"He was playing right up until he went into the hospital," she said. "Two weeks ago he was in Racine, Wis., giving a lecture on the history of jazz music."

Other survivors include four nieces and two nephews.

A memorial service will be held Monday at 6 p.m. at Hillside Chapel, 525 W. Martin Luther King Drive, Clifton. Anderson Funeral Home, Clifton, is handling arrangements.

Nancy M. Richards, manager at Playhouse

Nancy McFarland Richards, who was subscription manager at the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park for more than 20 years, died Thursday.

Ms. Richards, 79, of Mount Washington, began volunteering at the Playhouse when it opened in 1960. Several years later she she joined the staff as office manager and subscription manager.

"She knew everybody who'd ever been a subscriber. She loved the actors, loved 'the kids" - the staff people - and really was a stabilizing force for a lot folks," said Linda Parker, a longtime friend and former Playhouse box office manager.

And during all that time she volunteered and worked at the Playhouse, she bought her own tickets - making her a Playhouse subscriber for 39 years.

Her loyalty extended to her friends as well.

"She and I met as first-graders at Mount Washington public school," said Mary Linn White, a friend for 74 years. "We were crazy teens at Withrow and grew old talking of our children and grandchildren."

Earlier in her life, Ms. Richards was a social worker. She was an active supporter of the League of Women Voters and the Charter Party and was instrumental in opening the Anderson Hills Swim Club.
