Evelyn Lyon, mentor, volunteer

Evelyn Lyon, first president of the Licking Valley Girl Scout Council and a mentor to scout organizers and students, died Friday at Madonna Manor in Villa Hills, Ky. She was 98.

Mrs. Lyon was a member of the Cincinnati Yoga Teachers Association, the Mental Health Association of Northern Kentucky, St. Agnes Church in Fort Wright, Ky., and a volunteer with the Children's Psychiatric Hospital.

She had an energy and verve that belied her petite frame, and believed that just about anything was possible, with effort.

She instilled confidence in her Girl Scouts and her scout Leaders, just as she did in her own children and grandchildren, said her granddaughter, Kathy Eubanks, of Felicity.

"I don't think I ever heard her raise her voice to anybody," Ms. Eubanks said.

"She always had something nice to say. If you ever needed to be lifted up, you just had to spend some time with her."

Mrs. Lyon was a health food and nutrition advocate with a weakness for ice cream and tradition. Sunday family dinners on her screened-in porch in Park Hills, Ky., included chicken and corn on the cob and listening to the Reds on the radio.

Her yard was bright with flowers and she always had a project in the works. She visited elementary and high schools teaching yoga. She taught her grandchildren how to sew.

And if anyone needed help, she was an enthusiastic volunteer.

Her unwavering faith was a source of strength to herself and her family.

"In adverse times, her faith was her strength," Mrs. Eubanks said. "Her son and daughter-in-law died in the Beverly Hills fire. Her grandson died of cancer." A son, James Lyon, died in 1977.

Mrs. Lyon and her husband, former Covington city manager, state park designer and Edgewood, Ky., city engineer George Lyon Sr., raised three sons. George Lyon Sr., died in 1983.

Survivors include sons, George "Cub" Lyon Jr. of Villa Hills and Theodore "Ted" Lyon of Park Hills; a brother, Ralph Thiel of Park Hills; a sister, Mary K. Molloy of Fort Wright; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Agnes Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Ronald B.  Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow, Ky. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell, Ky. Memorials are suggested to Madonna Manor, 2344 Amsterdam Road, Villa Hills, Ky. 41017.

He started his culinary career in 1951 at the Holsum Baker Company in Savannah, Ga. He moved to Cincinnati in 1953 to work for the former Cincinnati Milling Machine Company as a cook, where he rose to the position of executive chef during his 17-year tenure.

He was president of Cincinnati United Beverage Association and also served as a Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce board member, a member of the Black Male Coalition and the Avondale Community Development council.

Greg Fields, 46, Hollywood comedy writer

As a student at Newport High School, Greg Fields worked as a stand-up comic at local nightclubs.

He went on to be an "A list" writer in Hollywood, with credits running the gamut from variety specials for Dean Martin to comedy bits for Bob Hope, Jay Leno and Jim Carrey.

Most recently, he was working on a series for the animators of "The Simpsons."

Mr. Fields died April 15 at his home in Woodland Hills, Calif.

He was 46.

He moved to Los Angeles in 1977, found a job as a liquor delivery boy and began writing jokes for Tom Dreesen, Slappy White and Sammy Shore.

From there, he embarked on a career as a TV writer, first for "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson," and later for "Solid Gold," "In Liv ing Color" and "The Parent 'Hood."

"He was also the only guy in Hollywood who would meet with (Disney chief) Michael Eisner in dirty sweats and a T-shirt and not care - and Eisner loved him," said Jesse Collins, a writer working with Mr. Fields on the animated series.

"Greg was on the Hollywood 'A' list, one of the most respected writers in the business."

Collins said Mr. Fields also had a habit of paying other people's bills:

"He'd hear about a writer who hadn't worked for a while. Without letting that person know, he'd send an envelope of cash - $1,000 here, $5,000 there, another $2,000 there."

Said Mr. Fields' father, long-time Newport School Board member Ken Fields, "That's the part that makes a guy most proud. You make a little money and all the trappings that go with it, and it never changed him, never affected him."

In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, Xiomara, a son, Michael, and a daughter, Michele, all of Los Angeles; a sister, Cathy Wecker of Alexandria, Ky.; brothers Steve Fields of Dallas, Gary Fields of Bowling Green, Ky., and Doug Fields of Lakeside Park, Ky.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Joann Fields.

Services took place Saturday.
