Patricia McDermott, volunteer
Patricia Ann McDermott did not let cystic fibrosis rule her life.

She lived with zest and enthusiasm, raising three sons, working, and volunteering. Mrs. McDermott, 51, of Villa Hills, Ky., died Friday at University Hospital.

"When she was young, CF patients were not given much of a life span. But she never let her illness stop her from doing anything," said her sister, Jan Schipper of Edgewood, Ky.

"Her determination and her happiness in living was evident in everything she did." Mrs. McDermott met her husband, Timothy, at the University of Kentucky Community College.

They married and had three sons.

Mrs. McDermott worked as a CPR instructor for St. Elizabeth Medical Center and the American Red Cross.

She was a volunteer at the Parish Kitchen in Covington, serving meals to homeless and low-income families.

When her sons were at Covington Catholic High School, she chaired the student retreat and was a member of the Football Mothers Club.

She was a member of St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs, Ky.

"She was always doing something for somebody else," her sister said. "She was friendly and outgoing, and liked to make people laugh.

"She knew how to make people feel at ease." Cystic fibrosis affects breathing.

"There's a lot of coughing," Ms. Schipper said.

But she didn't let that get in the way of living.

"If we went hiking, she went hiking with us," Ms. Schipper said.

"She didn't try to hide her disease, but she didn't call attention to it. It was something to deal with and then go on with life."

Other survivors include her husband, Timothy McDermott; sons, Kevin McDermott of Nederland, Colo., Patrick McDermott of Knoxville, Tenn., and Brian McDermott of Villa Hills; her mother, Kay Cassidy of Fort Wright; and a sister, Carol Robinson of Atlanta, Ga.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Church.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Ronald B.  Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow, Ky.

Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright, Ky.
