Julius Bare, battled kidney disease
Diagnosed with kidney disease at age 45, Julius A. Bare battled the illness to a standstill in the next 20 years, most of which he spent on dialysis.
Not even two failed transplants got him down, said his wife, Kitty.
"He accepted his illness and worked through it," she said. "He kept fighting it. He never let it get the best of him."
Mr. Bare died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. He was 65.
He had his first kidney transplant in 1984, a year after he was diagnosed with the disease. That organ worked for 3½ years before his body rejected it. His body rejected a second transplant, attempted in 1988, almost immediately.
Mr. Bare didn't let his need for dialysis three times a week curtail the traveling he and his wife liked to do, said a daughter, Jeanie Bailey, of Milford.
He would get treatment on the road in places like Florida, Houston and the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
"The social worker at his place here would help him find clinics where he could dialysize," Bailey said.
Mr. Bare, an engineering specialist for 40 years for Cincinnati Gas & Electric, played on company softball and baseball teams for about 10 years.
Later he coached CYO baseball at St. Andrew in Milford and won a city championship in the early 1970s.
He was a sports fan, too, particularly when his grandchildren were involved. He liked to watch them play soccer and baseball, and swim and cheer lead, said Bailey.
"He was a private, quiet man, but he had strong opinions on things and a good sense of humor," Kitty Bare said.
Surviving in addition to his wife and daughter are another daughter, Julie Mullalley of Cincinnati; four sons, Ken Bare of Cincinnati, Rusty Bare of Batavia, and Gary Bare and Ron Bare, both of Milford; a brother, Robert Bare of Cincinnati; four sisters, Pat Vandegeraft of Cincinnati, Ruth Bare of Royal Oak, Mich., Kathy Dawson of Spring, Texas, and Mary Turner of West Hartford, Conn.; and 17 grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be said at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Crescent Springs. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger.
Memorials are suggested to the Passionist Nuns, 1151 Donaldson Road, Erlanger, 41018.
