Frank Cremeans, one-term congressman
Former U.S. Rep. Frank Cremeans, known for narrowly defeating incumbent Democratic Rep. Ted Strickland in southern Ohio's 6th District in 1994, died Thursday night following a short illness, his daughter said Friday.
He was 59.

Cremeans, a Republican, represented the district for one term, losing the seat to Strickland in 1996. He ran unsuccessfully for the Ohio House in 1992.

Cremeans died at his home of complications of a respiratory ailment, said his daughter, Cari Duval. He had been diagnosed with neuropathy, a deterioration of the nervous system, she said.

In the 1994 congressional campaign, Cremeans used Strickland's answer to a hypothetical debate question about health care reform -- "We may have to raise some taxes" -- in a political ad that saturated both radio and television. He won with 51 percent of the vote.

In the House, Cremeans served on the Resources and Banking & Financial Services committees.

Other survivors include another daughter, Leigh Ane Moore of Richmond; a grandson, and a granddaughter.

No funeral service is planned, Duval said.

Burial will be private with a memorial service to be scheduled later, she said.
