Carolyn Roberts' hard life proved model
Carrieleen "Carolyn" Roberts displayed the toughness befitting her mountain heritage until the end of her 91 years.
She withstood breast cancer, the deaths of two of her four children and her husband, and lived the last 24 years of her life on her own in her Fort Thomas home.
She worked a garden last year, and before she was taken to St. Luke Hospital East on New Year's Eve with a pancreatitis attack, she had hung her laundry, said her son, Joe Roberts of Fort Thomas.
"She was a very strong individual," he said.
Mrs. Roberts died Thursday at St. Luke East.
She tried to instill her sense of self-reliance in her children, too, her son said.
"If she had a choice between her boys coming home with all A's on their report cards or beating the snot out of somebody who had called them `hillbillies,' she chose the latter," he said.
"She believed in standing up for yourself."
Mrs. Roberts was born and raised in Lee County, Ky.
She and her husband, Amster, who died in 1978, moved to Fort Thomas during World War II when he was assigned to establish a draft induction center at the old Army post there.
Also preceding her in death were a son, Bill Roberts, and a daughter, Janet Roberts.
Survivors include another son, J. Tom Roberts of Fort Thomas; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Thomas Church, Fort Thomas.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas.
Memorials are suggested to Parish Kitchen, 141 Pike St., Covington, Ky. 41011 or to the Queen of All Saints Church, Main Street, Beattyville, Ky. 41368.
