Edward Rohs, 'Buddy Roger'
Edward H. Rohs, better known in the days of the Cincinnati big band scene as Buddy Roger, never had much question about what he wanted to do with his life.

He was 14 when he began playing the saxophone, the clarinet and the flute, during the depths of the Great Depression.

"I remember him lying on his bed playing the clarinet hour after hour after hour," said his younger sister, Mary Glenn of Aiken, S.C.

"The clarinet can wear on your nerves after a while. Mom would yell up, 'Buddy, please put that thing down.' And he'd slam the door. But he wouldn't stop playing."

Rohs, of Springdale, died Wednesday. He was 85.

He grew up in Deer Park and played professionally with the Russ Morgan Band before World War II. He learned of another musician named Buddy Rohs, so he adopted the name Buddy Roger.

"Then he had a problem with that because there was a Buddy Roger who was married to Mary Pickford -- people were always asking him what Mary Pickford was really like," said his daughter, Pam Willis, of Springdale.

He joined the Navy and spent the war playing in the base band at the Great Lakes Naval Base in Chicago. It was there that he met his wife of 57 years, Mary Louanne Kearney, who was working with the USO.

He returned to Cincinnati after the war, touring with the Buddy Roger Orchestra and playing locally at Moonlight Gardens, Kenwood Country Club, public concerts at Fountain Square and other venues.

"He used to talk about going into parts of town that weren't the greatest parts of town, but they had great jazz," Willis said. "And they'd jam all night. He had a big sound on the sax -- it was something he was known for."

He opened the first of several Buddy Roger's music stores in Madeira in 1957, selling musical instruments and giving lessons. Willis said he preferred to work on a cash-only basis.

"It's how he built the stores," she said. "He didn't like to take out loans. It was something he carried with him from the Depression."

As his business grew, he spent less time traveling, Willis said, and more time at home with his family.

"Bud and Mary once flew to Las Vegas to hear the Count Basie Orchestra," said Dan Keith, one of his sons-in-law. "One of Basie's players turned out to be on of Bud's former students. He pulled Bud out of the audience and invited him to play with then. Bud's reach went pretty far."

His wife survives. Also surviving are another daughter, Pat Keith of Fairfield Township; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Schmidt Dhonau Funeral Home, 10980 Reading Road, Sharonville. Friends may gather there from 2 p.m. until the time of the service. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes. Association.

Rev. Stanley Tillman, XU professor

The Rev. Stanley Tillman, who taught philosophy at Xavier University for nearly 30 years, had a reputation for being a bit of a bulldog, a natural teacher who filled the classroom with his personality.

He was "an excellent teacher who engaged his students directly and personally," said the Rev. Frank Oppenheim, who teaches philosophy at Xavier now. "He challenged students to meet deep questions and think about them. His personality was all over the room. Pedagogy was his gift."

"He had the same passion for the students he taught and for the parishes he served in his declining years," said the Rev. Hank Kenney, another Xavier colleague. "He always saw the sunny side of things and the good in people."

The Rev. Tillman died Thursday at Colombiere Center in Clarkston, Mich. He was 88.

He attended St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati and entered the Society of Jesus soon after his graduation in 1932. He graduated from Xavier with degrees in Greek, Latin and English in 1937 and earned a master's degree in Greek at Loyola University in 1942. Ordained in West Baden, Ind., in 1945, he gathered a Ph.D. in philosophy from St. Louis University in 1954.

He joined the faculty at Xavier in 1953 and was appointed chairman of the philosophy department in 1954.

He left for Loyola's Chicago campus in 1962, taught there for two years and spent two more years at Loyola's Rome Center, before returning to Xavier in 1996.

After retiring from Xavier in 1985, he served as pastor at St. Leo Church in Murray, Ky., as well as campus minister at Murray State University. In 1992, he became administrator of St. Gregory's parish in Barbourville, Ky. In 2002, he celebrated his 70th anniversary as a Jesuit.

Survivors include his sister, Ruthanne Rust, and two nephews.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:45 a.m. Monday at Colombiere Center. Visitation will be from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday there. Burial will be in Colombiere Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Jesuit International Missions or Jesuit Partnership, 2059 North Sedgwick St., Chicago, Ill., 60614.
