Sergent Marsh, professional photographer
Sargent J. Marsh cut his teeth as a professional photographer in the chaos of the 1937 Ohio River flood, working around the clock for a week for The Cincinnati Post.
Mr. Marsh never lost his passion for photography and continued chronicling the growth of his hometown as a commercial photographer all the way through ground breaking of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and the implosion of Cinergy Field.

Mr. Marsh, 87, died Thursday evening at his Anderson Township home.

He worked for two commercial photographers before joining The Post staff. He later freelanced for the Associated Press and others. In the early 1940s, Mr. Marsh opened Marsh Photographers Inc. on Fourth Street.

Friend Michael Wilger preserves his work, having bought 12,000 negatives from Mr. Marsh.

"They weren't really for public distribution, but the quality is excellent," Wilger said. "There are a lot of downtown shots, aerial shots from the 1940s on. It's amazing to see the changes."

Mr. Marsh's also loved model trains and owned and operated The Crossing train store in a converted home on West McMicken Avenue for many years.

He had two loving marriages -- first with Charlene, who died in 1994. Then in September, at age 86, Mr. Marsh married Sue. "There was a chemistry, you could say, that clicked between us," she said. Other survivors include daughters Lynda Kugele of Delhi; Sandy Beyer of Arlington, Texas ; Pat Parkhill of Keswick, Va.; four grandchildren and five stepchildren.

A memorial service is set for 11 today at Milford Church of Christ. Memorials may be sent to Mount Washington Care Center, 6900 Beechmont, Cincinnati, Ohio 45230.

Sally Favret Crane, a homemaker, mother and devoted volunteer, died Wednesday at Good Samaritan Hospital. The Anderson Township resident was 75.

At the Cincinnati Art Museum, she did research, and served the United Way & Community Chest Volunteer Research Center, preparing a volunteer opportunities column that ran in local newspapers.

Later, she volunteered at Mercy Anderson Hospital, until last year when declining health forced her to quit.

Besides her husband, survivors include four daughters, Amy, Chris, Lucy and Peggy; two sons, Steve and Tony; and eight grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John Fisher Church, Newtown. Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Guardian Angels Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Glenmary Home Missioners, P.O. Box 465618, Cincinnati, Ohio 45246-5618.
