Edward Lose, loved nature, trout fishing
Edward "Red" Lose, 86, Silverton, an observer of nature since he began fishing as a 5-year-old, died Saturday of congestive heart failure.

For 49 years, he and his wife, Virginia, owned and operated Lose Supply House, which sold barber and beauty supplies throughout Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.

However, he was best known for his love of trout streams and the cycle of life that he witnessed there.

"It's difficult to resist philosophizing in an atmosphere of such creation," he wrote. "You end up by falling in love with the river -- it owns you."

"From a very very early age, each of us (three children) acquired a lifelong love of the outdoors and reverence for the interconnectedness of nature," said his daughter, Linnea Lose of Pleasant Ridge. "It was as genetic as the red hair I inherited."

Mr. Lose served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II.

After discharge, he worked for his uncle in Ft. Wayne, Ind., to learn how to operate a barber supply business.

He moved Lose Barber Supply to Cincinnati in 1952 and became the first to teach men's hairstyling to barbers in Cincinnati and Dayton.

Mr. Lose was one of the earliest members of Buckeye United Fly Fishers, which declared him an honorary life member. In 2002, BUFF recognized his dedication to protecting the Mad River near Springfield.

Besides his daughters, survivors include his wife of 62 years, Virginia Dolch Lose; sons, Eric Lose of Deer Park and Gregory Lose of Sunnyvale, Calif; and three grandchildren.

A service is set for 7:30 tonight at First Unitarian Church in Avondale at Reading and Linton streets. The family asks that personal memories be shared in lieu of flowers or contributions.
