Henry Hipkins, was Army lieutenant in WWII
On the last day of World War II in Germany, U.S. Army Lt. Henry Hipkins was at the mountaintop house that Adolf Hitler and his mistress, Eva Braun, had shared.

He and his fellow soldiers in the 970th Engineers were a stone's throw from the Eagles Nest in Berchtesgarden, said Mr. Hipkins' daughter, Susan Kay DeBow of Maineville. They could see Hitler's and Braun's clothes hanging together in a closet and could actually touch the garments.

The memories of that time remained a part of life for Mr. Hipkins, 89, who died Sunday after a long illness.

For 50 years, Mr. Hipkins of Norwood was a member of the American Legion and longtime member of the Norwood Masonic Lodge.

After the war, he worked at General Motors in Norwood for 38 years. He was in charge of the paint department before his retirement.

An elder and deacon, he was very involved in his church and had attended the Norwood Presbyterian and First Covenant Presbyterian churches. He enjoyed visiting shut-ins and often took new pastors to meet those who couldn't get out to church.

He also delivered Meals on Wheels.

He will be remembered as a kind, quiet man with a great sense of humor, his daughter said.

He and his wife, Jeanne Ellis Hipkins, were married 54 years. Mrs. Hipkins died in 1997. A grandchild also preceded him in death.

Besides Mrs. DeBow, survivors include two other daughters, Dr. Sandra Dutton Sheridan of Louisville, Ky., and Jane Ann Sobie of Asheville, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services were this morning at the Vorhis Funeral Home in Norwood. Memorial donations may be sent to Vitas Hospice.

Paul J. Policastro, decorated war veteran
Paul J. Policastro, who was awarded the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts during World War II, died Monday.

Mr. Policastro, 78, was with the 4th Marine Division that stormed the beaches at Iwo Jima on Feb. 19, 1945. The Japanese were deeply entrenched and waited until the Marines were on the beach before opening fire.

Mr. Policastro, who was 17 at the time, was one of the 17,372 Marines wounded in the battle. He was shot in the stomach and couldn't get out of bed for three months while recovering.

"When I was hit, I thought I was going to die," he told a Post reporter in 1995. "A priest gave me the last rites. I did pray, and I made a couple of promises. I really thought that was it. I had to learn to walk again."

One of those promises was that he would go back to church if he lived, said a granddaughter, Gina Iames. And he did.

"It restored his faith," she said. "He was very proud of being a Marine, and he wouldn't mind talking about Iwo Jima."

Mr. Policastro earned a degree in engineering and education from the University of Cincinnati. He worked in electronics and with electricity all of his life.

He was a member of the Montezuma Club Cincinnati Detachment, Marine Corps League, Charles R. Gailey Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7340, Disabled Americans Veterans, Purple Heart Club, 4th Marine Division., Sons of Italy and the United Italian Society.

Other survivors include daughters, Dawn Balitsis and Deborah Policastro; sons, Daniel Policastro, Joseph Policastro and David Policastro; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Church in Camp Washington .

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Hodapp Funeral Home in College Hill, where there will be Marine Corps League services at 7 p.m. and VFW services at 7:30 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Marine Corps League Foundation, P.O. Box 3070, Merrifield, Va. 22116.
