Kevin Vannarsdall, firefighter, more

Kevin Vannarsdall spent his adult life as a mechanic and volunteer firefighter before deciding on a career change.
He recently made the career switch when he became a licensed real estate agent for Century 21 in LaGrange.

"He said he wanted a change, to do something different," said his wife, Debra. "He studied and got his (real estate) license."

Mr. Vannarsdall, 38, of Carrollton, Ky., died Thursday in an automobile accident on Ky. 36, five miles west of Carrollton.

He was returning home from a doctor's appointment when his car crossed the center line and hit a truck, his wife said.

Mr. Vannarsdall and his wife married after high school and had two sons.

"He loved spending time with the kids," his wife said. "He was outspoken. If he believed something, he'd say it."

Mr. Vannarsdall was a Boy Scout troop leader and coached T-ball and soccer.

He also was a member of the First Baptist Church of Carrollton and until recently had worked at his father's garage and wrecking service in Carrollton.

Mr. Vannarsdall began volunteering at fire departments as a teen, his wife said, and most recently volunteered at the Carrollton Fire Department. He was a former member of Carroll County Ambulance Service, Carroll County Rescue Squad and Ghent Volunteer Fire Department.

Besides his wife, survivors include his sons, Zachary Thomas Vannarsdall and Ryan Kevin Vannarsdall; parents, Gene Thomas and Bonnie Jean Lewis Vannarsdall of Carrollton; a brother, Thomas Keith Vannarsdall of Carrollton; paternal grandmother, Virginia Vannarsdall of Ghent; and maternal grandmother, Lura Lewis of Carrollton.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Carrollton. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the church. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Carrollton.

Memorials are suggested to The Kevin Vannarsdall Memorial Fund, c/o First National Bank, P.O. Box 149, Carrollton, Ky.

James Butler, 59, lobbyist for Ashland Inc.
James R. Butler had a light touch and a great sense of humor that served him well in his job as a lobbyist for Ashland Inc.

"He always believed that business was serious, but that you didn't have to be serious to do business," said company spokesman Stan Lampe. "That made him very effective in terms of putting people at ease and dealing with people."

Mr. Butler, 59, of Cincinnati, died Sunday after a brief illness.

He began his career with Ashland Inc. in 1970 as a salesman in Buffalo, N.Y. In 1994, he became director of state and local government relations for the firm.

He served with several trade and civic groups, including the board of the Northern Kentucky Symphony and as treasurer for the Covington Business Council. He also volunteered with Kids Voting USA, a group that urges children to vote.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lois Manley Butler; a daughter, Lexie Centers of Hazard, Ky.; and one grandchild.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Ashland. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Steen Funeral Home Marshall Steen Chapel in Ashland.

Memorials may be made to Anderson Hills United Methodist Church, 7515 Forest Road, Cincinnati, Ohio, 45255; the Sherman Full Gospel Church, 2090 Fords Mill Road, Dry Ridge, Ky., 41035; or the First United Methodist Church, 1811 Carter Ave., Ashland, Ky., 41101.

Raymond Wallace, retired police officer
A former Cincinnati police officer who walked a beat in the neighborhood where he grew up died Tuesday at Christ Hospital.

Raymond Alfred Wallace Sr., 86, joined the police department in 1947 and, after taking off his badge, worked as a civilian for the department until 1976.

Before joining the police department, he attended Hampton University and worked for Cincinnati Milling Machine. He also served as a motor machinist mate third class in the Navy.

He had an early affection for nice cars and served as the family chauffer, because neither of his parents drove. He also loved playing pool. Those hobbies continued into adulthood. He also liked ham radio, listening to jazz and bartending.

His wife, Elizabeth, died in 1982.

Survivors include his sons, Tray Jr. and Ronnie; Dorothy Graham, his dear friend since the early 1990s; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are set for 7 tonight at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 1809 Rutland Ave. Visitation begins at 5:30 p.m. today at the church. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Union Baptist Cemetery.

John Filippi, carry-out owner

John Filippi, owner of Filippi's Carry Out in Montgomery for 30 years, died March 12.

He was 76.

In addition to running the carry-out, Mr. Filippi was a talented painter. Natural landscapes were his favorite subject.

Mr. Filippi served in the Marines in World War II.

He also was a longtime supporter of Xavier University.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley; brother, Ronald; sons, Joe and Johnny; daughters, Rhonda Wilson, Jan Dobbins, Gayle White, Carol Marquart and Sue Noxsel; 19 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services were Saturday at Mother of Sorrows Church in Golf Manor.

Memorial donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes. Association.
