Alice Linnemann, funeral homes' founder
Alice L. Fields Linnemann, who with her husband founded the Linnemann Funeral Homes in Northern Kentucky, died Monday. She was 83.

She served as the original dispatcher for the funeral home's ambulance service, while she and her husband, George E. "Bud" Linnemann, lived above the business and began raising five children.

They had married in 1943, when he served in World War II. When he returned home after the war, they started the business that eventually became the Linnemann Funeral Homes.

Mr. Linnemann died in 1993.

Mrs. Linnemann gave her family the gift of faith, said her son, Guy Linnemann of Ryland. "She had a caring heart and the compassion of Christ."

A member of St. Henry Church in Elsmere, she attended Mass daily and watched it on television when she was no longer able to get there in person.

She prayed the rosary daily, and her prayer list always had several pages of names.

Even total strangers would share their intimate thoughts with Mrs. Linnemann, her son said, because they sensed that she truly loved them and they were important to her.

Raised in poverty, she gave money extravagantly in her later years to favorite ministries.

"Somehow, she wanted to make life more fair with her giving," her son said. Other survivors include: a daughter, Laurie, of Fort Wright; sons, Hank, of Villa Hills, Mark, of Edgewood and Alan, of Charleston, S.C.; a sister, Elizabeth "Bessie" Hinzman of Park Hills; 10 grandchildren and a great-grandson.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Henry Church, Elsmere. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.

Memorials are suggested to Madonna Manor, 2344 Amsterdam Road, Villa Hills, Ky., 41017; United Ministries, 525 Graves Ave., Erlanger, Ky., 41018; or St. Walburg Monastery, 2500 Amsterdam Road, Villa Hills, Ky., 41017.

He owned Ohio Valley Wine and Beer Co. in Sharonville for more than 20 years with partner Bob Connelly until his death in 1992. Mr. Wiles then joined Heidelberg Distributing.

In 2003, Ohio Tavern News, an industry publication, honored him as "Wholesaler of the Year." For more than 10 years, he was chairman of the Wine Council for the Wholesale Beer and Wine Association of Ohio.

Mr. Wiles was born in Pulaski County, Ky. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served three years.

Survivors include his wife, Connie; three sons, Mark, Scott and Adam; four sisters, four brothers, four grandchildren, one great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.
