Robert G. Eagen, who helped form the public relations department at Procter & Gamble and later headed it, died Thursday. Mr. Eagen, of Clifton, was 88.
Born in Glendale and graduated from the University of Cincinnati, he began P&G employment in 1940, and was credited with helping to form the company's first PR department in 1944.

Eagen also was active in the community through various leadership positions with several organizations.

Of particular interest to Mr. Eagen was the Cincinnati Association for the Blind. He was that agency's president from 1973 to 1978 and served on its board from 1961 to 1996.

He also served on the board or as a trustee of the Clifton Town Meeting, the Cincinnati Music Festival Association, the Community Action Committee, The Catholic Telegraph, the Friar's Club, the Metropolitan Area Religious Coalition, the University of Cincinnati Library Guild, the Cincinnati Better Business Bureau and the Community Health and Welfare Council. He was a past president of the Cincinnati Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America and served in various leadership posts with the national organization.

He helped to develop Bicentennial Commons at Sawyer Point on Cincinnati's riverfront during his 12-year tenure on the Cincinnati Recreation Commission, including three terms as president.

"He had incredible wit and a memorable Irish sense of humor," said his daughter, Nancy. "His love of the written and spoken word was legendary. He was original in every way."

He retired from P&G in 1975.

Before joining the company, Mr. Eagen worked at the Cincinnati Board of Education and The Cincinnati Post.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Rose Thuman Eagen, and six children -- Nancy, Michael, Daniel, Mary, Timothy and Christopher. A son, David, preceded him in death.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Gilligan Funeral Home, 2926 Woodburn Ave., Walnut Hills. The funeral is 10 a.m. Tuesday at Bellarmine Chapel at Xavier University. Memorials are suggested to the Cincinnati Association for the Blind.

Vicky Horwitz, radiation therapist, museum docent
Vicky Staub Horwitz, 48, of Villa Hills, Ky., a radiation therapist at area hospitals, died Saturday. She had battled cancer for seven years.

She had worked at St. Elizabeth Medical Centers in Northern Kentucky and at Providence and Jewish hospitals in Cincinnati.

Mrs. Horwitz was a member of Mother of God Church in Covington and Wise Temple in Cincinnati. She was a docent with the Cincinnati Art Museum. She enjoyed tennis, skiing and softball.

"She was effervescent," said her husband, Martin J. Horwitz. "Her mother said it best about her: 'She had a daunting spirit that never flagged.'

"She inspired those she met with her great interest in life. She appreciated every facet of an experience. She knew how to stop and smell the roses."

Besides her husband, other survivors include a daughter, Alexandra Siebler Horwitz of Villa Hills; a son, Zachary R. Pille of Villa Hills; her parents, Jack and Paula Mayhall Staub of  Taylor Mill, Ky.; sisters, Linda Niehaus of Park Hills, Ky., Donna Grady of Erlanger, Ky., Martha Ringo of  Taylor Mill and Angel Sandfoss of Independence, Ky.; and brothers, John Staub of Dayton, Ohio, and Rick Staub of Florence.

Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Wednesday at Mother of God Church in Covington. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home in Latonia. Prayers will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
