George Spencer Jr., started baseball league
George C. Spencer Jr., whose World Wide Basketball League brought European semi-pro and American college teams together, died Sunday at his home in Petersburg, Ky. He was 62.
He began the league in the 1970s, arranging for American colleges to play a foreign team in America and then to play the team in Europe. Then he started annual Christmas and Thanksgiving tournaments hosted by the American University of San Juan.
The University of Kentucky and University of Cincinnati both played in the tournaments over the years, said Mr. Spencer's widow, Sharynn Page Spencer.
She estimated that her husband made 150 trips to Europe. His full-time job for 36 years was with the city of Cincinnati., where he was recreation supervisor at the time of his retirement.
Through that job, he worked with inner-city youths to get them scholarships or jobs with the European teams, his wife said.
"He was a mentor and a friend, and nobody ever knew about it," she said. "He never bragged about himself."
Mr. Spencer's son, Samuel R. Spencer, preceded him in death.

Lela Robinson, still played golf at age 101
Lela W. Robinson lived to be 102 -- and for most of those years, she really lived.
At an age few people see, the Cynthiana, Ky., resident continued to play bridge and golf.
She played in the Twilight League at the Cynthiana Country Club, still pitching and putting past her 101st birthday, said her nephew, Kenneth W. Brumback Jr. of Cynthiana.
"She was a very strong-willed woman," he said. "She had a tremendous amount of ability."
Mrs. Robinson died Wednesday.
She earned a fine arts degree from the University of Kentucky, then taught high school art classes in Tulsa, Okla.
When she returned to Kentucky, she helped start the Cynthiana Country Club, where she was co-creator and one of the first presidents of the Ladies Golf Association.
She was the kind of woman who turned heads whenever she walked into a room, her nephew said.
"She had her extremes, as any strong woman would. There were times when she was hard to deal with. At times, she could be very gracious," Brumback said.
Mrs. Robinson asked for a closed casket at her funeral, wanting her friends to remember her the way she looked in her prime, he said.
Her family planned to put on the casket a photo of her taken when she was about 85. "She is beautiful. She looks about 40," Brumback said.
Other survivors include a niece, Nona B. Macias of Guadalajara, Mexico. Her husband, Earl Robinson, preceded her in death.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation begins there at 11 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.
