Calvin Conliffe, first black on city school board
Calvin Hughes Conliffe raced to first place in his high school class -- graduating early so he could volunteer when World War II broke out -- and then never stopped achieving.

Before he was done, he'd earned a place in the prestigious GE Propulsion Hall of Fame, earned honorary degrees from two colleges, and chalked up two major firsts -- first black ever elected to the Cincinnati school board and first minority ever to serve as president of a major metropolitan school board.

Mr. Conliffe, 76, died April 27.

He flew biplanes in the Army Air Corps during the war, then graduated magna cum laude from Howard University when he came back home. Two months later, he began a 40-year career as a mechanical engineer for General Electric, working first on a top-secret nuclear propulsion project, then embarking on work that would result in major innovations in aircraft engine technology.

He retired from GE in 1991 as manager of commercial engine advanced technology programs. He was inducted into the hall of fame in 1995.

He served on the board of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and co-chaired the center's building committee.

He was honored for lifetime achievement by the National Conference for Community and Justice, where he was a board member. He also served on the boards of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, WCET-TV, the Episcopal Retirement Homes and the Episcopal Diocesan Council of Southern Ohio.

He received honorary doctorates from Cincinnati State Technical and Community College and Mount Saint Joseph College, as well as a distinguished alumni award from Howard University.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Lucille Conliffe; son Darryl Conliffe of Farmington Hills, Mich.; daughters, Adrienne C. James of Cincinnati and Kimberly Stephens of Bethesda, Md; brothers, McGregor Conliffe of Washington, and Wharton Conliffe of Cincinnati; a sister, Madelon Brown of Atlanta; and five grandchildren.

Services have been held.

Memorials may be made to the Calvin H. Conliffe Endowed Scholarships Fund of Howard University, payable to the university, 2225 Georgia Avenue NW, Suite 627, Washington, D.C., 20059, care of Jennifer Donaldson.

Austin Wright, UC professor, novelist
A memorial service is scheduled from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the University of Cincinnati Faculty Club for Austin M. Wright, a retired UC English professor, novelist and writing scholar.

Mr. Wright, 80, of Clifton, died April 23 at Maple Knoll Village in Springdale.

He retired in 1993 after 32 years at UC, where he was the Charles Phelps Taft Professor of English Language and Literature and recipient of awards for teaching and creative work. He also wrote seven novels, several of them critically acclaimed.

New York Times critic Christopher Lehmann-Haupt said in his review of "Telling Time," published in 1995, that it "touches the mind and stretches the heart as only Mr. Wright can do."

The author himself said the book was about "the loss of everything, the dying of everything and what do you do about it."

In the 1994 novel "After Gregory," a Cincinnati teacher survives an intended suicide jump into the Ohio River, changes his identity and tries to discover who he really is. 1997's "Disciples," Mr. Wright's last book, tells of a kidnapped baby taken to be reared by a religious fanatic. The story is told in turn by eight characters.

Sally Wright, married to Mr. Wright for 52 years, said her husband "wrote literary novels, thinking man's novels, not genre novels."

His first, "Camden's Eyes," published in 1969, was his "most innovative -- much admired by other writers interested in experimental novels," she said. "He received lots of letters of admiration from other writers, including Saul Bellow."

Mr. Wright merged literary criticism and fiction for his book: "Recalcitrance, Faulkner, and the Professors: A Critical Fiction," published in 1990. His scholarly works on writing include "Formal Principles in the Novel" and "On Defining the Short Story: The Genre Question."

He husband was "a very quiet man with a lot of humor," Mrs. Wright said. "He had intellectual confidence, but nothing immodest or braggadocio. Socially, he was extremely quiet and it often took people a long time to get to know him. When they did, they usually admired him for his quiet brilliance and good sense."

Mr. Wright had a great interest in steam engines and steamships and was a member of the Steamship Historical Society of America.

He also enjoyed opera, particularly the works of Wagner, and was interested in birds, especially the plight of the endangered wood thrush.

A native of Yonkers, N.Y., he received a bachelor's degree from Harvard and master's and doctorate degrees from the University of Chicago.

Besides his wife, other survivors include daughters, Katharine Wright of State College, Pa., and Margaret Wright of Philadelphia; a sister, Mary Toynbee of Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, and two granddaughters.

Arrangements were handled by Anderson Funeral Home of Finneytown.

John Contadino, organist
Cincinnati has lost a musician whose work helped stir the meaning and emotion of the Roman Catholic liturgy and who helped bring early television programs to the city.

John Louis Contadino, 78, died Thursday after a long illness.

A graduate of Purcell High School, Mr. Contadino received his master's degree at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and did post-graduate work at Shrivenham University in England.

An organist, his first love was church music. He was known for adding subtle creativity to the Roman Catholic litany.

"His musical additions were like brush strokes, which comprised an unforgettable final product," said his son-in-law, Charles Stephenson.

Mr. Contadino served on the faculty at McNicholas High School and, though the years, acted as an organist and choir director at St. Peter and Paul, All Saints, St. Francis de Sales, St. Augustine and Sacred Heart churches.

In TV's early days, he conducted the WCPO-TV orchestra.

Survivors include his mother, Alba Contadino; his wife, Megs Contadino; a daughter, Lisa Stephenson and a grandson.
